"Sport teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose, it teaches you about life"- Billie Jean King.
On Monday, January 7th, the fall sport athletes, coaches, and parents gathered in the cafeteria to honor our student athletes. The night was started by Mr. Miller and student body president, Kyle Nelson. Then it was time to filter through the line. Once everyone had their fill, Mr. Devin Dickey started the honors where he talked about boys golf. Joining him on stage were the members of the team: juniors Quade Pelton and Kyle Nelson, sophomores Brandon Greenwall and Corbin Schneider, and freshmen Kody Ryser and Brock Ziegler. As you can imagine, Coach Dickey kept the crowd entertained with his lighthearted humor and long winded names for the boys. He recognized all of the boys and their successes throughout the season. Their work ethic was complimented, especially those that dual sported and came to practice at 6:00 a.m. Before leaving the stage, each member of the Tiger golf team received a letter.
Next, Mrs. Noe came up to the stage for girls volleyball. She started her recognition by telling the girls, "Come on don't be shy" as she gestured them to join her and Coach Chadwick on stage before she recapped the season. The girls finished the season with a winning record, including a seven game winning streak. They went into districts seated 3rd. They played well, but lost the game with Cheraw needed to advance. While the season did not go as they hoped, Coach Noe was very proud of the girls. She handed out some awards to the very deserving team. Jaden and Madie were awarded best serve percentage, Madie was top in assists, Reece was top passer, and Kaci was awarded top kills, aces, and blocks. The team will miss the leadership of the seniors, Madie and Kaci, but Mrs. Noe is optimistic about the talent on the team for seasons to come. Kaci Chadwick and Madie Weed received All Conference Honors and Reece Unruh received All Conference Honorable Mention.
After the ladies, came the gents with Mr. Smith and the football players taking the stage. Mr. Smith reviewed the season and thanked his young team for their play. There were many times the season was a struggle due to injuries and inexperience, but the boys learned and grew from it. The team started out strong, but the season wore on them resulting in going into districts in third place. The conference this year became even more challenging with the addition of another six man team. The Tigers did not advance from the first round of districts. Nevertheless, all of the players lettered, and some of the players earned higher honors. All Conference Honorable Mention went to Dawson Worley and Kyle Nelson. Quade Pelton received All Conference Honors and named to 1st Team All State. Jade Cozart was awarded All Conference and 2nd Team All State.
The night was capped off by the cheerleaders. Angie Weed stepped up to talk about the cheerleaders' successful season. Coach Weed expressed her gratitude toward the girls for their dedication to the sport and practicing before and after school and other activities. The girls started preparing this summer learning their routine, but the competition season did not start until November. They came home with first and second place finishes. For the State appearance, the girls received second place in the 2A division, bringing home another title. Coach Weed voiced her appreciation to all of them, especially the seniors, Madie and Kaci, whose leadership in this transition year was invaluable.
Thankfulness was the overall theme of the night. Each and every coach conveyed gratitude to all for the support. Every player who spoke mentioned the love of the sport and how much they appreciated the dedication of coaches, teammates, and community. Coach Dickey gave thanks to Coach Tallman, Coach Craig, and Charlotte Tallman for help with the new electronic score cards and the Smoky River Golf Club for the use of the course. Mrs. Noe reiterated her gratitude toward all of those who helped: her bookkeepers, including Wendy Dickey and Penni Shalberg, and all of the hard to find line judges. Mr. Smith gave a shout out to all of his stat keepers, including Matt Roberts and Casey Hyle. He also thanked the announcers, Russ Ball and Sam Mitchek, for lending their voices to the field and Jay Geiger for all of his expertise running the clock. Each and every coach expressed how much they appreciated the support of the school and administration, Booster Club, the parents, the community, and lastly, the dedication of their student athletes.
