Inclusive Remote Operation

Unprecedented Support

During these challenging times, the college has come together to provide the best possible student support. Moving our entire operations virtually in a matter of days is a reflection of the care and commitment of every Chemeketa employee.

As we continue to adapt to an evolving and uncertain landscape, it is important that we center the experiences of those students who are most vulnerable. This is no ordinary challenge as we consider the many obstacles we experience as well as our students.

It is my hope that you find some helpful information from the resources below because - we are truly in this together.

Sincerely,

Vivi Caleffi Prichard

Chemeketa Resources for Students

Who said that knowledge is power? I would say that they are absolutely correct. One way to promote equity is to make sure students are aware of available resources. Below are the resource pages that the college has created for students.

  • Remote Learning Hub: everything from how to sign up for a class to a list of internal and external resources.

  • Virtual Learning Center: this is a one-step resource for online access to academic support services, such as: library services, online tutoring, language center and more.

  • Coronavirus Resources and Information: this page has the most up-to-date information for students and community about our operations. There are also links to information about the virus.

  • Balancing conflicting demands

Beyond the Food Pantry

This guide from Sara Golrich-Rab of The Hope Center provides critical information for understanding how to support #RealCollege students during COVID-19.

"Colleges and universities across the United States and around the world are scrambling to keep their students, faculty, and staff healthy, safe, and educated during the COVID-19 pandemic. As experts on the daily crises that derail #RealCollege students and prevent them from completing their degrees our team at the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice offers the following considerations and resources to support your work."

Leading with Equity

Are you wondering what you can do to promote equitable student success? The following resources from EAB lists several ideas. Here are some highlights:

Identify and Remove Barriers

The sudden shift to remote instruction had unintended and unavoidable consequences for our students. What are the ways that we can mitigate its affects? What are the ways that current practices and process may present a barrier to online learning and customer service?

Consider the impacts of an entire term of remote instruction for vulnerable High School students. How can we prepare to serve those students?

What outreach can be done to provide students who failed their classes this term? What support and resources can we provide so they are ready to come back next term?

In reviewing your course data on Blackborad, you can identify the students may not be logging into class as often. Try and reach out to students and understand their context - what may be in the way of their education and ability to fully participate in class?

Complete the diagnostic that follows to learn more about potential impacts.

Changing Circumstances

COVID-19 has changed the circumstances for many of us and our students. Many students don’t realize that a sudden change in income can make them eligible for additional funding. If your students are unsure of how to write their appeal letter, resources like Swift Student can help them explain that they or their families have lost a job or seen reduced hours.

Community Support

Connect with nonprofits, churches, food banks, community and advocacy groups

These groups often have the expertise, additional funds or access to emergency funds, personnel, and resources to supplement outstanding student need.
