God of War: Ragnarök is the latest release in the God of War franchise.
Developed by Santa Monica Studios God of War has been iconic in the video game industry since it's first release back in 2005 on the Playstation 2. With the previous game God of War 2018 exploring Norse mythology instead of the previous Greek exploration of the first three games the change in pantheons also came with a change in gameplay as well.
Starting with GoW 2018 the gameplay started to focus more on exploration and combat with puzzles segmented throughout with less boss battles. Gow 2018 ultimately won Game of The Year 2018 showing the change in approach had worked.
the original trilogy told it's own story of Greek mythology with it's main character Kratos the son of Zeus seeking vengeance against the gods of Olympus ending up in Olympus being destroyed. The new games switch to Norse mythology with the likes of Thor, Odin, and Baldur being the main antagonists of the new games. The new games also introduce the characters of Atreus the son of Kratos, Mimr, and Freya K as main allies to Kratos in the latest releases. Atreus is revealed to be Loki the Norse god of mischief in GoW 2018 it also ended with Baldur being slain by Kratos becoming a "god killer" once again, however the motivation is different from his previous experiences with gods.
In the Latest release GoW Ragnarok Kratos and Atreus are forced to start Ragnarok to defeat Odin. Kratos character develops the most in this game from the previous games, he develops from a rageful, vengeful god to a calm, stoic father who would do anything to protect his son. When he previously would seek violence in the previous games 2018 and Ragnarok Kratos has chosen a path of peace making him one of the most interesting characters in modern fiction.
The game of the year nominee GoW Ragnarok was arguably the most anticipated game of 2022 and has shown that a change in direction is exactly what the franchise needed to once again become one of gaming's greatest franchises.
