Specific entry requirements:Grade 6 in GCSE English Language or English Literature, grade 6 in GCSE Film Studies and/or Media Studies if taken at GCSE.
What will you study?
In Year 12, you will study a wide range of different media which includes Advertising and Marketing, Newspapers, Film Industry, Radio, Video Games, TV, Print, Online Magazines and On-line Media. A Level Media Studies centres around applying an analytical framework (media language, audience, representation and context) which you learn through discussion, analysis and debating. You will develop a range of technical skills required for both constructing and deconstructing media products. You will study a synoptic unit on the newspaper industry, focusing on the Daily Mail and The Guardian and their online counterparts. Similarly you will study a synoptic unit of Longform Television dramas (LFTV), focusing on Stranger Things and Deutschland 86.
In Year 13 you will continue to use aspects of the theoretical framework to analyse cross-media productions. You will explore and analyse the ideas and arguments from debates about the media. You will practically explore the creation of three linked media products in a cross-media production. You will revise the synoptic units in LFTVs and the newspaper industry.
What Super Curricular opportunities are there linked to this subject?
Students can expect to attend conferences at the British Film Institute (BFI). Similarly, a club is currently running between Chelsea Academy and The Telegraph, developing Media Literacy and knowledge about the newspaper industry as a whole, including potential career paths.
What can this course lead to?
A level Media Studies students can go onto study Media, TV or Film at University as a practical degree, a theoretical degree or a combination of the two. This can lead to a very broad range of professions in media, film and journalism.
A good degree in a subject like Media Studies can also develop a wide range of transferable skills including analysis, visual communication, problem solving, as well as communication, presentation and organizational skills.
