Dear Guardian,

Welcome to Eighth Grade English Language Arts; this is going to be a great year! English Language Arts has always been my passion. In short, this is a class about words, and words are awesome! We use words to speak, read, write, exchange information, learn, and express ourselves. Language is infinite, complex, and powerful! Teaching 8th Grade English Language Arts is exactly where I want to be, because I believe these students have immense potential to use words to make positive change.

I am thrilled to be back for my second year at Culbreth Middle School. I graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Middle Grades Education, with concentrations in English Language Arts and Social Studies. I completed my student teaching at Culbreth under the direction of Helen Motta, ELA teacher of the Mahalo Team.

My hope for this year is that students are inspired by the power and beauty of language. I want to implore students to use language to evoke, debate, convince, empower, and compel. This year is sure to be exciting and challenging for your student, as we explore complex concepts in text, deepen our ability to comprehend and derive meaning from various forms of literature, and refine and stretch our writing and speaking skills. Eighth grade is an incredibly formative year as students build confidence in their academic abilities and take ownership of their education. I am confident that your student will thrive as a part of a nurturing and eager community of learners.

Guardian involvement is critical to the success of your student. The best way to stay up to date on Eighth grade ELA is through my blog: or the Ohana Homework Page, linked on the Culbreth website. I encourage guardians also to check PowerSchool regularly for missing assignments and dropping grades. Lastly, encouraging at-home reading is the best way to ensure your students’ success. On my website, you will find a Parent Contact Form. Please fill this out as soon as possible. If you have limited access to internet, kindly send phone and email information with your student.

My contact information is listed below. Please contact me anytime with questions, concerns, and joys. It is a blessing to be a part of this community, and I look forward to partnering with you as I work to provide your child with the best English Language Arts education possible.
