Ms. Montgomery took over student government three years ago from the former advisor, Mr Loomis, when she first joined Chatham. She was initially drawn to the club because she was interested in getting to work closely with students. Since becoming advisor, Ms. Montgomery has watched students grow into leaders and advocates for their community.
One of the accomplishments she helped student government achieve was the senior lunch privilege, a Chatham High School policy which allows the senior class to leave school during their lunch periods. Ms. Montgomery reports that initially administration was opposed to this idea, but with consistent dedication to the cause, student government was successful in this pursuit.
As an English teacher, Ms. Montgomery teaches her students many of the skills needed to excel in their Capstone research presentation, which all Chatham students present at the end of senior year. She believes that student government participation provides students with many opportunities to foster such skills, including leadership, teamwork, professionalism, and confidence, all of which are integral in life after high school as well.
Ms. Montgomery has high hopes for student government this year and beyond, as she is excited to see what students have to offer to their Chatham school community in the future.
