Nanoscience and Applied Chemistry

The department of Nanoscience and Chemistry is a new department at College of Medical and Applied Sciences Charmo University. It was established in July 2020, first academic year is 2020/2021. This department is a four-years undergraduate study leading to a bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in chemistry. The department will be a centre of excellence in teaching chemical sciences and research. A high-quality education will provide at the undergraduate study, which graduated a professional’s chemist to participate in the society. Charmo University will instil in its student a spirit of independent research and a deep commitment to scientific thinking and continuous progress. This department will offer a BSc program, and postgraduate program in chemistry.

The department will design to address the needs of modern knowledge-based industries, and nanotechnology where the need for applied scientific skills is being driven by expansion of high-technology industries such as nano-materials energy, environment and advanced manufacturing. Students, completing the undergraduate and high graduate degree in applied chemistry, will develop into professionals with wide-ranging technical and scientific skills, who are able to communicate effectively at all levels with engineers, scientists, and industrialists.

The department have a plan to connect different disciplines like physics, biology, medicine and earth and environmental sciences and then link them though the Nanoscience with Chemistry, and then students of this department will engage with other applied sciences to complete their picture and the deep connection between the applied chemistry and other applied Science. As applied chemistry will teach fields of analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, physical, organic chemistry, materials chemistry, and petroleum chemistry. The graduated students, will be able to use the diverse set of skills acquired as part of this track, including experimental and theoretical to produce and analyse new chemical projects.

Vision

The Applied Chemistry Department of Charmo University recognised by the excellence teaching with new understanding for the field of science, which will be able to reduce the gap between different field. The department will offer the highest quality undergraduate (B.S.) and postgraduate (MSc and PhD.) curriculum. This department will have a highly cooperate effectively with other departments to provide the valuable information for student in chemistry, physics, environmental, material science. The department will offer excellent and fascinating introductory courses which will both instruct and stimulate students in all of the university's programs, including the areas of nano-science materials which will be an area for gathering different field in one area to produce high quality graduated students and high-quality researches for supporting our university ranking.

Objectives:

Graduating students qualified for servicing the community and the government plans and programs of development, education and industry within Kurdistan.
Conducting academic and scientific research necessary for the improve the quality of researches and increase the university ranking.
Providing the technical services in field of nanoscience and applied chemistry to both government industry and private sectors.
Trying to find solutions to the difficult problems that the petroleum field by suffers using local competencies through cooperation with the research groups approved in our university.

Program Objectives

The Bachelor of Science degree program in Nanoscience and Applied Chemistry has the following goals:

Students are able to be critical and independent learners, and should recognize, recall, show an understanding of scientific knowledge, and communicate information. Graduates will be able to update their professional skills continuously to design integrated systems of people, information, energy, machines, materials and financial resources.
Students are able to design, perform, analyze the results of chemical experiments, and be able to select appropriate practical methods and implement the safety techniques.
Students are able to act as a source of expertise and assume responsibility in handling instrumentation independently and in team, and be able to formulate and present technical reports concisely.
Students are able to carry out independent research in preparation for pursuing higher degrees and be observant to the ethical standards.
Students will have a knowledge in different fields especially chemistry and physics.

Program Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of the BSc program in Chemistry, graduates will be able to:

Draw defendable conclusions from data.
Solve problems using systematic methods.
Rationalize properties and structures using the principles of chemistry.
Identify relationships between applied chemical principles and the other sciences.
Correctly describe chemical principles and theories.
Use correct chemical nomenclature, structural symbols, and terminology to accurately describe a process.
Write a formal publication-quality report which concisely and unambiguously summarizes results of an experiment and states a conclusion and reviews a scientific topic.
Assess the safety of a procedure and take the necessary precautions, based on the issues of safety regulations, ethics and societal issues in the use of chemicals in the laboratory work.
Correctly use the proper tools and other equipment in laboratories.
Be able to work in research and industrial institutions.
