Secondary Application Materials for Bachelor of Arts in Architecture Program: Fall 2027 Admission Cycle

2+2 Applicants completing an AAS in Architectural Technology (A40100T) from CPCC

Applicants earning the A40100T degree must also earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be eligible for this 2+2 transfer track.

Application to the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree at the School of Architecture (SoA) is a two-part process for transfers students.

Part One - UNC Charlotte Application

Applicants to UNC Charlotte interested in studying Architecture must declare "Architecture" as their intended major in their general application (using one of the portals described on the Undergraduate Admissions page). Once that declaration is made, they will receive messages in their Future 49er Portal with instructions for the second part of the application; however, applicants to the 2+2 track should use these instructions instead.

Part Two - SoA Application

The SoA secondary process is designed to evaluate creativity and critical thinking, not professional skills; however, applicants intending to enroll through our 2+2 articulation agreement with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) after earning the transfer degree (A40100T) are expected to demonstrate architectural design skills comparable to an SoA student completing their second year (and entering into their third year) in our program. A portfolio is therefore required.

In some cases, an applicants portfoliio from the A40100T program will present design skills comparable to an SoA student completing their first year (and entering into the second year) in our program may be offered a seat in our second year studios (these applicants are still eligible to complete the B.A. in Architecture degree in two years and to move into our 2-year Master of Architecture Program, after review by our graduate admissions committee at the time of their application to that program).

Admission into the B.A. program through this transfer portal is not a guarantee of admission in our graduate program.

For the SoA secondary application process, prospective students must complete and submit the five items listed below. The tabs below include instructions for completing these exercises and submitting them on your Future 49er Portal status page. Please note that in the Portal, it may say the portfolio is optional, however the portfolio is required for all 2+2 applicants seeking placement in 2nd or 3rd year design studios.

The exercises do not have "right" answers, but they do have specific instructions, so read these carefully.

These exercises are designed to evaluate curiosity, rigor, ambition, and passion - not specific abilities or knowledge. We are looking for students who are eager to explore and to challenge themselves, regardless of their current skills and experiences. We will provide our students with what they need to pursue their interest in architecture, from a foundational understanding to specialized training. The application exercises expose prospective students to the creative processes that students at the SoA execute throughout their education.

WARNING regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence: We understand that applicants enter our exercise prompts into Artificial Intelligence engines, and we strongly discourage that practice. When applicants use AI engines, we see many versions of the same “solutions” given by those engines, which makes it more difficult to evaluate creativity and critical thinking. It is obvious to us when applicants use AI and when they do not, and we place far greater value on original work compared to work generated by an AI engine.
