January 2026 Edition
“Joy, feeling one's own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul.”— Maria Montessori
Throughout my career in Montessori education, I have often been asked the question, “Why Montessori?” This week, the answer came to me in an unexpected moment.
On days when my schedule is packed, I often begin my morning by stepping into a primary classroom to soak in some peace before the craziness of the day begins. The teachers have come to expect me to simply show up for a few minutes, standing quietly in the background to observe.
As I stood in a primary room one morning, I was struck by all the “intangibles” that were somehow so tangible. I saw children concentrating so deeply on meaningful work that they didn’t even notice my presence. I observed internalized self-regulation as they walked carefully around others’ work, spoke in soft voices, and waited patiently for a teacher’s help. I witnessed self-direction and a profound sense of order as they chose work independently, used it purposefully, and returned it to its proper place. I saw care, respect, and kindness as they helped one another and worked cooperatively.
So, I’m going to answer the question “Why Montessori?” with a few questions of my own. Why wouldn’t you want your child in an environment that nurtures these intangibles—qualities so essential for future success? Why wouldn’t you want your child in a classroom intentionally designed to meet their developmental needs? Why wouldn’t you choose an educational approach that supports the whole child: intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual? For me, the answer is clear: Montessori matters because it cultivates not only capable learners, but grounded, confident, and compassionate human beings.
As we begin the second half of the school year, we’d like to revisit two foundational principles of learning in the Primary classroom: order and concentration.
Everything in the Primary classroom has a clear place and purpose. Materials are thoughtfully arranged from simple to complex, and routines and procedures are followed consistently. This external order helps young children feel secure in their environment. In turn, it supports the development of internal order—the ability to organize their thoughts, actions, and behaviors.
Concentration is highly valued and occurs when a child deeply focuses on a task they have freely chosen. During the work cycle, children work without interruptions, often for extended periods of time. Hands-on materials, freedom of choice, and appropriately challenging work allow children to enter deep concentration. Through this process, children build independence, self-discipline, and a genuine love of learning.
Order creates the calm, predictable environment children need, and concentration is the natural result—leading to deep, meaningful engagement with their work.
The CHAMP Awards were created by Greg Blatt, Founder and Executive Director of Coaches for Character. This is the fifth year that Charleston County School District will be awarding the CHAMP Award to eighty-eight 8th and 12th grade students. This award is designed to honor true “Unsung Heroes” who all too often are not recognized for their accomplishments.
The selection process, managed by Coaches for Character and Charleston County school counselors, focuses on identifying and selecting students who often go unnoticed even though they have accomplished great things in their home, community, church or school. The criteria by which students are selected should be based on character, community service, academic effort, and overcoming adversity.
If you would like to nominate a Charleston County 8th or 12th grader, please submit the nomination form below. All nominations must be submitted by Friday, February 20th, 2026. A CHAMP Awards Advisory Committee at each Charleston County middle and high school will choose two winners. All CHAMP Award recipients will be recognized at the CHAMP Awards ceremony this spring.
The next meeting is Tuesday, January 20, 2026 ⋅ 3:45pm – 4:30pm
All i-Ready and MAP winter assessment reports went home to parents this past week. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
We all share the same goal: ensuring every student has a wonderful and successful school year. Research consistently shows that being in the classroom on time, every day, is one of the strongest predictors of a child's academic success. As we start the new year, let's renew our commitment to making school attendance a top priority!
A Note on Communication: Open communication about absences is vital for your child’s learning journey. Please know that students with 3 unexcused absences in a row or 5 unexcused absences overall are marked as truant. Clear communication helps us support your family and keep accurate records.
Exciting News: Streamlining Absence Reporting! To make communicating absences much easier for you, CCSD has launched a new feature in the Parent Portal! This digital tool is designed to streamline the reporting process, making it simple for you and ensuring our front office staff are informed instantly.
Please click here for a detailed guide for step-by-step instructions on how to use this new feature. You are always able to send in a written note or a doctor's note when your child returns. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Lori in the front office.
The School Choice Application for the 2026-2027 school year is now available. This application is required if you have a child who is NOT currently enrolled at MCS. If your child is already an enrolled student at MCS, you do not need to fill out this application. Please note the application window closes promptly on February 12 at 12:00 PM. MCS is offering three tour dates for prospective parents. Click here to see the dates and to signup to attend a tour or share this info with a friend. Contact Ms. Lori with any questions regarding the application process.
Please join us in supporting MCS at our next Spirit Night on January 26 at Ireland's Own from 5-9pm!
The next PTO meeting is Mon., Jan. 12 at 6:30pm which will be virtual so all parents can attend.
