February 2026 Edition
“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’”
—Maria Montessori
I’ve been a Montessori educator for over 30 years, and during that time I’ve been asked countless questions about Montessori education. Many of those questions center around common misconceptions. Over the next few newsletters, I’d like to address some of them—questions you may very well have asked yourself.
One of the most common misconceptions I hear is:
“Aren’t Montessori classrooms chaotic and unstructured?”
I think this assumption often comes from the fact that, unlike a traditional classroom, a Montessori classroom has a lot happening at once. You’ll see children engaged in different types of work, across multiple subject areas, all at the same time.
Recently, an instructional coach from the district visited our classroom for her first Montessori observation. When we met afterward, she said with amazement, “It’s like they know exactly what to do! When they finish something, they clean it up, roll up their rug, and move on to the next activity. How do they know what to do? How do they transition without the teacher telling them?”
I explained that one of the primary goals of a Montessori classroom is to help children develop internal motivation and self-regulation. To support this, the teacher spends a great deal of time at the beginning of the year explicitly teaching classroom expectations. Maria Montessori referred to this approach as “freedom with responsibility.”
Children are free to move about the classroom and choose their work as long as their movements are purposeful, the materials are used appropriately, and their time is used constructively.
Conversely, when a child is not using the materials appropriately or is moving without purpose, the teacher steps in to limit that freedom. This might mean choosing the child’s workspace or asking the child to put away a material that is being misused. The more responsible the child becomes, the more freedom they are given—and with that freedom comes increased internal motivation and self-regulation.
Far from being unstructured, the Montessori classroom is intentionally designed to foster independence, responsibility, and deep engagement in learning. Structure is not imposed from the outside—it’s built from within the child.
Our Student Council is hosting a Valentine's Day Candy Gram sale from February 3rd-February 11th. There will be a variety of candy and non-candy options to choose from, and middle school students will be available to assist younger students with writing the candy grams.
Candy Grams will be delivered to classrooms on Friday, February 13th.
While our students are enjoying learning about cultures and each other, we are excited to host International Festival, a night highlighting countries, cultures, regions, and customs represented in our school community. All families are invited to attend as guests!

The CHAMP Awards were created by Greg Blatt, Founder and Executive Director of Coaches for Character. This is the fifth year that Charleston County School District will be awarding the CHAMP Award to eighty-eight 8th and 12th grade students. This award is designed to honor true “Unsung Heroes” who all too often are not recognized for their accomplishments.
The selection process, managed by Coaches for Character and Charleston County school counselors, focuses on identifying and selecting students who often go unnoticed even though they have accomplished great things in their home, community, church or school. The criteria by which students are selected should be based on character, community service, academic effort, and overcoming adversity.
If you would like to nominate a Charleston County 8th or 12th grader, please submit the nomination form below. All nominations must be submitted by Friday, February 20th, 2026. A CHAMP Awards Advisory Committee at each Charleston County middle and high school will choose two winners. All CHAMP Award recipients will be recognized at the CHAMP Awards ceremony this spring.
