A critical piece of the sensemaking process in the science classroom is the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) Framework. CER was developed by McNeill and Krajcik (2012) to support students in developing scientific explanations and arguments, provide explicit guidance for what to include in science writing, oral presentations, and classroom discussions, and encourage students in using evidence from investigation to answer questions or solve problems independently. CER begins with students being asked questions that require them to think deeply about what they have observed, experienced, or read firsthand, and to integrate their findings into an explanation for a specific purpose or audience.
