Coronation Celebrations

The celebrations began with the whole school in the Year 2 Courtyard listening to the traditional sound of the bagpipes being played by Mr Chang-Ho Yoon this was followed by our very own town crier aka Mr Brodley who announced the Coronation activities for the afternoon.

Coronation Trail and Tea

After the proclamation all the children set off around the school grounds on a Coronation Trail where they had to find 12 stations with information and activities to do based on the coronation.  This was followed by a delicious Coronation tea with the parents and a wonderful rendition of a special Coronation song sung by all the children from Year 1 to Year 6 and the day finished with the National Anthem.  Nursery had lots of fun too, dressing up as beefeaters during the week and having fun with their own royal cardboard cutouts.

Outdoor Learning - Communication and Knots!

Outdoor learning with year 5 this week was all about having to communicate.  Elizabeth had to instruct her friends to make the shape of a circle. She wasn't allowed to say the word circle. Instead, she had to tell her friends, who were holding the rope and weren't allowed to let go of it, to move into different positions. The shapes got harder and they really had to use their communicative skills to make the shape.

They were also getting prepared for tying a hammock and a rope swing by learning different types of knots such as the Abchor Hitch and Timber Hitch.

Primary Maths Challenge Bonus Round

Having done extremely well in the Primary Maths Challenge in November, five of our Year 6 mathematicians were invited to sit the Bonus Round paper in February.

They tackled very challenging problems with great enthusiasm and we were proud to award them with their certificates and badges this morning.

Congratulations to:

Especially well done to Hanbo who scored a remarkable 21/25!

The Primary Maths Challenge is an annual international competition organised by the Mathematical Association.

Drumming Day at The Oratory School

The Year 5 and 6 drum students had a groovy and energy-filled day at the Oratory last week. Together with 25 other students, they played an array of unconventional instruments like buckets, chairs, broomsticks, and rubbish can lids, as well as some large bass drums, and of course: a drum kit. Mr John Donnelly from the Oratory ran the session and created his own hip-hop/techno backing track for the day. The students learned different grooves to play in each section and when to start and stop. It was a great experience playing with that many other drummers, and having to listen and watch to know what to play.

Y5 Model Making (Eye/Solar System)

The children in Year 5 were tasked with making a model of an eye or a solar system for a house competition, in order to support and cement their understanding of their Science and Engineering topic, Light. They had to choose their materials, label the parts of their model, and include a description for each part.

There was a huge variety of fantastic models made out of a wide range of materials. The judging proved tricky due to the extremely high standard but we managed, after much deliberation, to decide upon the winners.
