Background and Philosophy

"Without ambition, one starts nothing. Without work, one accomplishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

It may be best for you to consider me as your personal trainer specializing in Physics instead of the more general "instructor" role. If your goal is to develop a conceptual understanding of Introductory Physics, add to and enhance your mathematical skills in a scientific context, and apply a skills-based, process-driven mindset to understand and eventually solve a variety of practical problems, I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to work with you.

Understanding Physics requires a wide range of skills applied simultaneously, not the least of which involves math. Of course, doing well in Physics is not just about your ability to solve mathematical equations. Often overlooked is the ability to decode information presented to you in text and/or diagrams and later to effectively communicate your understanding verbally or in writing; this skill is primarily language-based. In our time together, I will provide context and opportunity to enhance both your math- and language-based skills as well as a conceptual framework within which you'll deploy those skills.

Here's the key detail that brings us back to the personal trainer idea: I can't do the learning for you. If you're going to achieve your goals in the gym, it's up to you to do the work. You don't get stronger by watching somebody else lift weights. You don't get any healthier by watching somebody else putting in time on a treadmill. It's the same in this class. It is highly unlikely that you'll make great progress in your understanding if you're simply planning on listening to what I say or watching what I do. As your personal trainer I will provide contextual background information, share my expertise and experience to help you enhance areas of strength, assign exercises to address any opportunities for improvement in your knowledge and skills, and provide support along the way. And, if you find you need more than what I can offer in our our large-group sessions, I am happy to offer small-group and 1-on-1 sessions via office hours during the week. My students can schedule a meeting with me at tinyurl.com/flaherty-officehours.
