High on a mountain live 100 mighty dragons all named Broccoli. When a tremendous wind blows half the dragons away, ten others sail off to become professional surfers in Hawaii. The oldest and youngest dragons take a train to New York City to start their own heavy metal band. And a mysterious wizard turns four more into a unicorn, a werewolf, a zombie, and a tiny pink poodle. Now how many dragons are left?
Delight in following each and every dragon as they leave their home for marvelous adventures, until there is but one dragon remaining. That’s when this final dragon named Broccoli retreats to a cave for the winter and reappears in the spring with a surprise that will thrill and delight!

Call attention to the number 100. Count the dragons on each page as the adventures take some away. How many dragons are left as they leave?
What were some of the places that the dragons went?
What happened when there was only one dragon left? What happened in the spring?
What was your favorite part of the story?
If you had 100 dragons, would you give them all the same name? What would you name some of them?
Book Activities
Create subtraction problems from the story as the number of dragons decreases.
Broccoli offers an opportunity to use geography skills as some of the dragons move to different states and countries. Have a map or globe available to locate these places.
Classify the dragons by color.
Count to 100 on the last page of the story.
Make a number graph of the dragons that leave. What is the largest number of dragons on any given page? What is the smallest?
