I am a senior who will attend RISD in the fall, majoring in Graphic Design with a concentration (minor) in Computations, Technology, and Culture. I also hope to take some French and Computer Science classes at Brown.
In the future, I want to be a UX/UI Designer and help make people's digital experience more seamless and enjoyable.
I investigated youth as a journey of self-exploration. I illustrate different aspects of this process of growth, including curiosity, fear, adventure, getting lost, playfulness, and idealism. I use space design for my figures to explore to emulate the exploration of our inner worlds as adolescents, representing our emotional space with a physical space. I also expanded the boundaries of surrealism, discovering ways to abstract reality through fantastical elements while grounding it with realistic perspectives.
Throughout the investigation, I experimented with various mediums such as glass, gouache, acrylic, and digital. I also implement common threads, including surface design and repetition, which aided in cohesion. Overtime, I fleshed out my concept in focusing more on the environment rather than the individual. In other words, this shift focuses on the search for an identity rather than the identity itself. With more deliberation on the interactions between the figure(s) and the environment, I deepened my concept of self-exploration and weaved together a rich narrative that captures both the bright enthusiasm of youth, and its underlying melancholic tones.

Cloudwalkers explore an unfamiliar and surreal landscape, expressing the wondrous journey of finding oneself.

A paracosm is a detailed, fantasy world created by children and often has complex systems and imaginary characters. This piece notes on the ability to forge a tangible universe and integrate it into one's reality. The figures explore a shared space of dreams and abstraction.

Ecstasy can refer to euphoric and elated emotions, but it also has more dangerous connotations in terms of intoxication and delirium. Leaving the outcome of the dive ambiguous allows for interpretation of their future, indicative of the uncertainty adolescents feel. Will lofty future goals lead to your detriment, or your fulfillment? Is your current euphoria authentic or artificial?

Tangled thoughts in the journey of self-exploration can lead to a convoluted and suffocating mind-space. Recurring, toxic mantras can distort the perception of oneself, and lead to the loss of a sense of identity.

Sometimes we can feel still even in a sea of motion, completely detached from reality. The alien-esque beings contribute to the surreal experience, and the way they merge into a blue mass indicates the lack of attention being paid to our surroundings.

It's easy to feel small in a big world, when everyone seems to have their lives together and knows where they're going and who they are except you. When crossing the threshold into the "real world," comparison can engulf a vulnerable adolescent's sense of self.

Balter captures the spirit of youth, dancing artlessly without worry of judgement or appearance. It is to be happy to simply be, and take every opportunity to enjoy life.

Slides are an iconic component of a children's playground, but also serve to be great building blocks of a graphic pattern with their solid colors and bold lines. I emphasize these features and illustrate what a playful soul may look like through this surreal design.

Eccentric figures gracefully float on a transparent glass plane, providing a sense of contentment and wonder in a void absent of the comfort of structure.
the assignment:
Begin by observing a phenomenon or choosing an object in the natural world. Create a visual reaction to this object or phenomenon. You may use any medium and work at any scale. Document this work and upload it as your first response.
Then, make a transformation to or modification of your first response. We encourage you to impose no limits to the potential nature or scale of the alteration to your first solution. Document this altered work and upload it as your second response.

I was inspired by komorebi: a Japanese term for the sunlight that filters through the leaves. It is a source of nostalgia, comfort, and serenity to those who seek it. It utilizes transparent, translucent, and opaque layers to symbolize the passing of time, the value of remembering one's arduous past, having hope for the future, and ultimately staying grounded in the present. Its delicacy in conjunction with its ability to create an impactful experience is indicative of youth itself -- a period of purity and innocence that is inevitably tarnished but in some aspects can be carried throughout maturity.

Komorebi II is the transformation or sequel to komorebi. At first, it began as a simple clear box. However, adding the component of light and sound truly transformed it from a solely visual piece to an immersive experience. Using komorebi as a tool to project shadows onto multiple sheets of painted paper created a sense of movement, emulating the dynamic forest canopy as you trek through its serene terrain.

An abstract exploration into the tumult of a relationship between sisters. There is somewhat of a conflict between the painterly and graphic elements but ultimately, they are able to find unity.

Wild leopards are obscured by architectural forms and shadows and hide in unexpected crevices, intruding on the familiarity of a man-made environment. They symbolize both the curiosity and caution that stem from mystery.

“tutti frutti”: Whimsical colors and amorphous shapes capture the pure glee of summer vacation during childhood, inspired by the fresh fruits of the blissful season.
“vagabond”: The unfamiliar forest outside the art studio gradually transforms into an amalgam of miscellaneous shapes and colors, symbolizing my desire to return home. The sheer forms indicate both the transience of time and the uncertainty of the future.

The variation in the poses suggests we don’t necessarily need to step, but can slide, jump, or reach outside of our comfort zones. Building self-confidence is a process that is unique to everyone, and we should all be patient with ourselves.

Plastic and millennial pink-- the epitomes of consumerism. In a society that is dominated by it, it can be difficult to discern what truly matters. But by being materialistic in which we truly value items we purchase rather than the act or ability to purchase them, life can become more beautiful.

Inspired by the Chaos Theory and Butterfly Effect, a kaleidoscope perfectly symbolizes both with its ability to create a beautiful pattern out of a random assortment of beads and how one small movement can change it all. This pattern depicts how everyone is significant, and how their existence alone makes a huge difference in the passage of time.

Overwhelmingly, we tend to overlook our negative emotions, suppressing them to maintain an artificial sense of "positivity only." But recognizing fear, doubt, and insecurity, valuing them for wanting to protect us, and embracing the full scope of the emotional spectrum is the best way to care for oneself.
