How might we create a stronger link between teaching a language and teaching literacy?

By the end of this workshop you will have a deeper understanding of how teaching a language explicitly teaches literacy skills such as grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. You will also be able to understand how different languages activities and tasks fit into the Big 6 Pillars of Reading. You will have an opportunity to view and use a variety of resources to support teaching literacy as a part of a languages lesson.

For the last 6 months at St Mary’s Primary School in Greensborough we have been asking the questions “How might we establish a culture in our school that is self renewing?” and “How might we create a stronger link between teaching a language and teaching literacy?” You will see through the use of using grammar colour coded flashcards as well as sorting activities according to the Big 6 Pillars of Reading has supported classroom teachers to better understand how teaching a language allows explicit teaching of literacy skills.
