Natural Fertility Awareness

Catholic Diocese of Hamilton

God has created marriage as an “intimate partnership of life and love” (Gaudium et spes, no. 48). In God’s design, marriage is a unique union of one man with one woman “for the whole of life” (Canon, 1055, The Code of Canon Law). Marriage is directed to the good of the spouses and to the creation and nurturing of new human life (Gaudium et spes, no. 48). Therefore, decisions regarding the timing and number of children in marriage is a sacred task which God has entrusted to the husband and wife. This establishes the foundation of which the Church calls “Responsible Parenthood” – which is, the invitation to discern the will of God for your marriage while respecting His design for life and love.

Natural Fertility Awareness is a general term for methods based upon the observation, tracking and interpretation of naturally occurring signs/symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's reproductive cycle. The times of fertility/infertility may then be chosen for intercourse according to the couple`s desire to achieve or avoid pregnancy. Natural Fertility Awareness can assist in identifying underlying causes of infertility and other reproductive health related issues.

Methods of Natural Fertility Awareness which provide an authentic approach to natural family planning are ones which respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act. Therefore, they support God’s design for married love.

The Catholic Diocese of Hamilton is pleased to promote the following methods of Natural Fertility Awareness.
