Students who are taking private lessons in addition to their music class show a higher rate of success and a higher level of enjoyment on their instrument. These students have a lower frustration level because they are able to receive more individualized attention that they cannot always receive in class due to the structure and size of the classes. Students who seek the additional help of a private teacher are more likely to continue on their instrument.
Private lessons typically cost $25-30 for a ½ hour lesson and $50-$60 for an hour lesson, depending on the teacher. A weekly ½ - hour lesson for elementary and middle school students is recommended although a longer lesson is recommended for more serious students.
It is important to contact several private teachers to find a compatible personality for your music student. Also know that price should not the most important factor and remember that the adage “you get what you pay for” holds true for teachers. Some of these instructors have years of experience and multiple degrees and may charge a bit more for this added wisdom. Be sure to ask about the teacher’s background and experiences, and tell them a little about your child before the first lesson.
The following is not a complete list of teachers in the area, but a list of those that I am aware of who are highly recommended. If you know of other recommended local private teachers, please let me know so that I can contact them and possibly add them to the list.
