Painting 2

Eras Tour Collage

Size, Collage/ Acrylic on Canvas, 2023

I got the idea for this painting from Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. On the poster, she has different pictures of herself representing each era. I took that idea and made a collage from it.

My process was very simple. I started by mapping out and measuring where things would go on my canvas. I then mixed colors and painted a different one for her respective albums. Her debut is a mint green, Fearless is yellow, Speak Now is purple, Red is obviously red, 1989 is light blue, reputation is a darker grey, Lover is a light pink, Folklore is grey, Evermore is a bronzey brown, and midnights is a darker blue. Then I found a few pictures from each era and printed them out. I glued them on and added glitter to the borders.

Each album has its own iconography and symbolism.  Debu has butterflies and the eras tour outfit. Fearless has heart hands and screenshots from her music videos. Speak now has the number 13 and fireworks. Red has heart-shaped sunglasses and more music video stills. 1989 has polaroids and the New York City skyline. REputation has snakes and newspaper. Lover has glitter and love. Folklore has cardigans and planets, in reference to her lyrics. Evermore has the woods. Midnights has friendship bracelets and the eras tour.

I didn;t struggle much with this painting. The only thing I would've done differently was picking less pixelated pictures to print.

I love that this painting, and the Eras Tour in general, normalize going through phases and changing.

Niya Miller "Koi Pond" (Narrative)

8x10, Watercolor on Paper, 2023

I got the idea for this painting from something I saw online. It was originally meant to be a sketch. I thought it would be a cute couples painting, but things ended up not working out so I lost the orange half.

I started by cutting a piece of watercolor paper in half and tracing a koi fish on each one. I then painted the first layer, which was the background. For the darker one, I painted a light orange on the whole thing before painting the darker color. For the white, I skipped that step and just went in with the dark orange first. For the dark color, I just painted random splotches of color.

This painting doesn't have any real symbolism.

If I started over, I would make sure to WAIT in between layers. In the white one, you can see where I ended up not waiting and it bled into the blue.

This painting would fall into a realistic genre. I still think the idea is adorable, I just wish it wasn't for the person it was ariginally for.

The idea for this painting was to make a mirrorball with lyrics from one of my favorite songs of the same name.

I started by tracing a large circle onto my watercolor paper. I then took a bunch of different colors and putting them across the disco ball. I tried to keep them all somewhat wet so that the colors would blend easier. I then added the lines with a black sharpie. I also decided to add a backgroud to the painting. Finally, I added the lyrics "I've never been a natural/all I do is try, try, try" from the song mirrorball by Taylor Swift.

In the song, Taylor Swift talks about how she feels like a disco ball, saying things like "I change everything about me to fit in", and "I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me." I found this song really relatable and chose to paint it.

I'm unsure what genre this is, but if i had to pick one it would probably be realistic. I love bringing lyrics and songs to life through paintings and I would love to do it more in my art.

Portrait

Size,  Acrylic on Canvas, 2023

My idea for this painting was to take a picture from the jazz band concert last May and paint it in a painterly style.

I tried something I'm not used to doing with this peice- an actual person. Painting faces and body parts scares me because there's so much room for error. I started with a baes coat of white. Then I added a black stage and beige-ish backgroud to re-create the color of the band shell in the cpac. I used an online resource to simplify my reference and traced that from a projector onto my canvas. I started to get the basic shapes and colors down before working on any details. My two favorite things to paint were my hair and the instrument. Something I struggled with was how my arms were positioned and my face.

There is no symbolic imagery in this painting.

I usually struggle with the same few things in my paintings, especially ones that aren't over-the-top and weird. I had a hard time with the face and how my arms and fingers looked. i overcame these struggles my asking others for advice. If I started over, I would add a different background color and fix the tie.

This is a realistic painting. I think it is very different from my actual style, and I love that it's different and gave me something to improve on.
