CJ Kerr "Twin Suns"

12,16, Colored Pencils, 2021

My idea for this artwork came from Star Wars. The idea was to draw the twin suns from the planet tatooine. I first got the idea from wanting to draw to the planet but decided to just draw the suns instead. The inspiration came from wanting to draw a landscape with colored pencils. I planned to draw Luke Skywalker's house in the corner but decided not to.

For this artwork I wanted to do a landscape and use something that I had never used before and that's how I got the idea to use colored pencils. I had never worked with colored pencils so I practiced before starting my project. When I colored I would use multiple colors at once so they mixed together. I started with the darker colors on the ground then the light colors for the sky. I added the suns last and made one red and the other orange.

With this artwork I want people to think about sunrises and sunsets and how beautiful they can be. The suns are symbolic to what lies outside of our universe.

What was most difficult for me with this artwork was the fact that I had never done a project with colored pencils before and I hadn't worked with blending a lot. I overcame this by practising before starting my project. If I started over I would use brighter colors because I feel like my finished work looked bland in the sky.

The style of my artwork is Surrealism. What makes it unique to my style is the landscape aspect. I love that this project was a landscape because I feel that that was the best way to make the suns look good.

CJ Kerr "Watering Can"

7,6, Clay, 2021

My idea was to re-create a watering can that I have at house out of clay. I wanted to make it big and paint a flower and patterns on the side and I got the inspiration from seeing custom made watering cans. I also got inspiration because my grandma would buy plain watering cans then paint them with cool patterns.

I started with red clay but moved to grey. I made the base, then the handle, then the water spout. I was going to paint it but decided to glaze it. For the glaze color, I used old brick.

My watering can has no deeper meaning or symbolism. I just did it for fun.

The most difficult part for me was getting everything to stay together and not collapse on itself. I overcame this by using things to hold it up when it dried. If I started over I would glaze it with multiple colors instead of just one.

The style of my watering can is realistic.

CJ Kerr "Surreal Sunrise"

10,8, Acrylic Paint/Watercolor Paint, 2021

My Idea for this project was to paint a Sunrise but use colors that aren't in sunrises. I got this idea from a similar project that I did last year. I got inspiration from seeing oddly colored sunsets after storms. I remember a pink sunset from when I was young.

My process was to paint the ground and river, then I worked on the mountains and sunrise. I used acrylic paint and then blended it together with watercolor. The sunrise went from yellow to green to blue.

There is no symbolism behind this painting. When people look at this I want them to think about the coolest sunrise or sunset they have ever seen and then compare it to my painting.

The most difficult part of this project was blending everything together. I overcame this by using watercolor on top of the acrylic to blend. If I started over I would blend the watercolor when the acrylic was still wet instead of letting it dry.

The style of this work is Surreal. What makes it unique to my personal style is that I painted a landscape and landscapes are my favorite to draw or paint. What I love most about my work is that the green and teal that I added to the sunrise go so well together. They blended better than I thought.
