Friday, June 12th
It was so nice to see some of you yesterday at our "reverse" parade!! Thank you for coming out to see us! We hope that you all have a great summer!!
Please read this letter from Mrs. Gammon.
We have compiled a list of resources for you to use over the next two weeks and over the summer. Please visit this link to learn about the "Battle of the Books" and other great resources for reading, math, science, and VA Studies. As we find more resources, we will continue to add to the list.
Writing: Keep working on “My Fourth Grade Year in CBG 4.” An editable copy will be in your writing Canvas or Google Classroom. You may continue to work on this for the remainder of the school year.
Reading: Polish up your original, educational video game! Go to your reading Canvas or Google Classroom to share the link to your slide deck so others can see your creative ideas! Look for the posting called “Video Game Challenge Sharing.” Be sure to change the sharing setting on your slide deck project so others can see it.
Check out a new resource in your “backpack” on my.ccpsnet.net. It’s a reading program called “Lexia Core 5.” There are lots of reading activities to expand your skills. This is a resource that we encourage you to use for the remainder of the school year and over the summer to keep your reading skills fresh. When you first log in, you will be asked to take an auto-placement assessment to determine where to start instruction. This should take about 20 minutes. If you don’t finish in one sitting, your work will be saved for you to finish later. A letter is available at this link with additional information about home access if you try to access the program through an iPad. Most students will just access the program in their backpack on the my.ccpsnet.net dashboard.
Science: Reveal your new animal!! Read your background story on Flipgrid. Link will be found in Google Classroom Science. Check out some of your classmates discoveries.

Calling all Interplanetary Travel Agents! Record your travel ad on Flipgrid. There has been a nice response already. Check out the 17 travel agents.
**Look for the flipgrid code in your Google Classroom Science .
Watch mine as an example. Make it interesting by using costumes and/or props. You have a 90 seconds to record. I suggest practicing...I know I needed to! I will preview them first before I publish them.
I can’t wait to see them. If you cannot do a flipgrid, then let me know if you would like me to share your written version. I may start a shared folder where others can view.
SOCIAL STUDIES :
Take today to review again all the material from yesterday as it was a lot! Then in your notebook or on a separate piece of paper, brainstorm all of the possible problems VA and the US face now that the Civil War is over. Please consider money, transportation, families, homes, farms, schools, etc. Then brainstorm possible solutions to at least 3 of their suggested problems. You need to think of real possible solutions - no more wars.

Our daily plan is posted below. This follows the same plan sent by Mrs. Dubiel. We are going to update our website in the evening and publish for the next day. This will include any new information needed for the next day.
Google Hangout Opportunities:
READING: Continue to work on “Make a Meme” to recommend a book that you are reading. We love the memes that you have made so far! Carefully read the directions before getting started. There will be an editable copy on your reading Canvas or Google Classroom. This link is view only. Only edit your slide (your student number PLUS ONE) from the copy in your reading Canvas or Google Classroom, but check out some of the recommendations from your classmates on their slide! Carefully read the directions. Please use a book that you are currently reading or have just finished. Consider using your reading log or Bark for VARC books if you would like.
Need a book? Try MyOn, other resources on my.ccpsnet.net, and library.chesterfield.gov. Don't have a library card yet? MATH : Today, Mrs. Scarpinato will host a math Google Hangout on Canvas at 10:00 a.m. with anyone who needs help with adding or subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. This is optional, and being offered for those who need extra help. A link will be in your math Canvas under “assignments” instead of modules where you normally look for math work.
Even though it won’t be graded, try the “quiz” problems at this link. Just do your work on notebook paper. NO calculators! Try to do these as independently as possible. If you get stuck, go back to the notes slide deck and look over the notes and/or watch some of the tutorial videos again. If you are struggling with this, please consider joining today’s Google Hangout. Tomorrow, the answer key will be posted on in Canvas so you can self-check.
If you’d like to try some additional math challenges, try out some of these enrichment activities this week at this link (view only copy). This is posted in your math Canvas too.
SCIENCE: Now might be a good time to advertise travel to another planet. Go back and look at what you wrote from Day 13- IF you didn’t get a chance to write it, now is the time. (From Day 13)
Cosmic Travel Agent: Choose one of 7 planets (not Earth)and advertise to Earthlings to come visit. This is a great source for space information of what we have been studying and beyond...https://www.dkfindout.com/us/search/solar-system/
This is, of course, using your imagination. You do not have to take into account how humans would not be able to go to other planets easily. You are stretching that line. You may remember my mentioning in class, skating on Saturn’s rings, as an example. Naturally this would not be possible. Take the facts of the planets and let your imagination run wild!
You must include 3 facts minimum about the planet. You may emphasize one as your “hook” to attract visitors, but the other facts must be included somehow. See my example using Earth. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qFkJr2bC80ZFr4jDz3v0Us2GkWw3lD1qfWsEKptpttU/edit
**Now create a flipgrid advertisement. ***Look for the flipgrid code in your Google Classroom Science this morning.

I can’t wait to see them. If you cannot do a flipgrid, then let me know if you would like me to share your written version. I may start a shared folder where others can view.
SOCIAL STUDIES :The Civil War ended with the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant. The Union won!!! I had a quiz ready to go for things strictly North, South or both. Click on this link and see how your would have done: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fGlb8cF6SUO7YaxlqReNifYrvJrlf2P0MyzgUmzaztc/edit
Now go back and look through your notes to see how many you got right :) I will have the quiz answers available for you tomorrow on our website! Please check there!

The notes (view only copy) are available at the this link, and they are also posted in your math Canvas account. Review the notes, watch the videos, and solve the Khan Academy practice problems to review. You can also visit old activities from this unit on Canvas.
Have you mastered fractions and mixed numbers? If you’d like to try some additional math challenges, try out some of these enrichment activities this week at this link (view only copy). This will be posted in your math Canvas too.
SCIENCE - Who are these guys? Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Galileo. We will pick up with our space unit by looking at four early astronomers at this link. Know which astronomers were geocentric and which were heliocentric. Review Sheet: This sheet can be simply completed on notebook paper.
VA STUDIES - We left off almost through with the Civil War! I'm sad that we can't finish this unit! We left off learning about Nat Turner, John Brown and Harriet Tubman, three abolitionists. Create a triple Venn Diagram of these three comparing and contrasting them. IF you have your spiral, please do it in there. They all have many similarities along with many differences. Please use your notebook and online notes I put on Google classroom if you need to. Please also review your notes on the “Battle at Sea” between the Monitor and the Merrimack, two ironclad ships that fought and ended in a draw (a tie).

Math - Test on part 2 of the fraction concepts unit is tomorrow. The "Who is Winning" activity should be SUBMITTED on Canvas - it will be a formative grade - NO calculator. They had an opportunity to look at the fractions part 1 assessments from first quarter (in Student Mastery Connect) to identify "red flags" to watch out for with problem solving. We will not spend much time with this unit since most of it is a review. Please continue to practice multiplication facts daily! We use multiplication all of the time. Thank you for your support from home with this. If your child is absent, please encourage them to keep up with their make up work on Canvas if possible. Most everything they need is there.

VA Studies: All groups are now working on their projects. ALL supplies should be here but unfortunately are not. One person from each group was in charge of bringing in a foam board or cardboard to be used for the and some groups have not had their team mate bring this in which means that group can not start. I have scrounged up and made two from old boxes and have handed those out but that is all have. I am hopeful that tomorrow everyone will remember what they are in charge of, because lists were made last week, and all things will be brought in. I have donated many many of my own things as well but I too am running out. I head buzz today that some people have not brought in anything and I hope that by tomorrow these people will contribute their share as it hinders the progress of the building for the rest of the team. Thanks for your help at home. I am grading all the writing papers, this will take some time so please be patient.

VA Studies: Students are still working on their research for their culture paper. This assignment began this Monday I believe. By now most students are done researching and have started their paper, in fact some people have finished their papers already. On the other hand others are not using their time wisely and are very behind. Please ask your child where they are in this process. Mrs. Birk said the paper was due Friday but I may postpone it to Monday at the latest. ALL information is on google classroom including the 9 questions, the directions for the paper along with the rubric. NExt week we will begin the cultural landscape project. Many of the supplies are too big that have been brought in. Tomorrow I will show pictures of finished projects in years past so students can get some sort of idea what to do. I also am in need of 27 desk size flat cardboard for the projects. If you have any that you can send in that are already flat that would be great! It is sooooooooooooooooooooooo good to be back!
