Most student courses have been created for you, and students have been auto-enrolled. However, there may exist times when you need to create your own course. For example, you may want to create your own course if you:
Creating a Course
Start a New Course.
3. Give the course a name, and click Create course. Leave the course private for now, and don’t make it publicly visible. You can do these once your course is finished and is ready to use.
Once you have created your course, you have two options to add members. You can provide members with a link that they can click to enroll, or you can add them manually.
2. Click People in the Course Navigation Bar on the near left.
3. Click People in the Course Navigation Bar on the near left.
4. Select Add user(s) by Email Address.
5. Type in their email addresses. Separate multiple addresses by commas.
6. Choose the role that you would like for them to hold in your course (student, teacher, observer, etc.). Descriptions of the varying roles can be found here.
7. If you have created sections in your course, select the section to which you would like to add them.
8. Click Next.
The next time the member launches Canvas, they will be invited to join your course. If you have a large number of members to add, this can get cumbersome, and you may want to enroll members with a link.
If you need to add a large number of people, or you would like to give them the option of joining your course, you may want to allow them to self-enroll with a link. All those who click the link will be added in the student role. If you do not have the means to share a clickable link, a shortened bit.ly link might be helpful when typing in a web address. However, one can always share a Google Doc or an email with the link embedded. To enable and locate your course’s join link, watch the following video. Written directions are also included in the link below.
Click here for written instructions on how to enroll with a link.
Once added to the course, Canvas generates a course invitation that appears on the user’s dashboard. The user must accept the course invitation to participate. Until the course invitation is accepted, the user's status will display as pending.
