WEaver READs 2019

What is the history of WEaver READs?

WEaver READs is a tradition at Bettie Weaver Elementary where families look forward to an authentic community experience based around a children’s book. It started during the 2011-2012 school year and has been going strong ever since. Below you will see the history of what titles have been read at Weaver!

  • 2011-2012 THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN by E.B. White
  • 2012-2013 THE CRICKET IN TIMES SQUARE by George Selden.
  • 2013-2014 SUMMER OF THE WOODS by Steve Smith (one of our own Weaver dads)
  • 2014-2015 THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN by Katherine Applegate
  • 2015-2016 THE LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES by Julie Andrews Edwards
  • 2016-2017 FANTASTIC MR. FOX by Roald Dahl
  • 2017-2018 WISHTREE by Katherine Applegate
  • 2018-2019 APPLEBLOSSOM THE POSSUM by Holly Goldberg Sloan

This whole-school book club idea is modeled after the All City Reads and is based on the One School, One Book program. It’s a nationwide initiative promoted by Read to Them, a nonprofit organization based in Richmond, Virginia. We are proud to be a part of this reading project!

What does research say?

What is the key ingredient to the success of this venture? Drum roll…parents reading aloud to their children at home on a daily basis to build lifelong readers! As research shows, this type of school-wide literacy event promotes interest in reading, builds a community of readers, and encourages parent involvement while improving vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension of our young readers.
