Arthur Ashe

“Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.”

Who Was Arthur Ashe?

Long before Serena and Venus Williams, Ashe served as a trailblazer in the sport of tennis. Ashe became the first, and remains the only, African American male tennis player to win both the U.S. Open and Wimbledon singles titles. He was ranked as the #1 tennis player in the world in both 1968 and 1976. In 1985 he was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame. Arthur Ashe is best known as a tennis legend, but would later serve as a writer, civil rights activist, coach, and sports commentator.
