About Mr Lim Tze Peng

A Brief Biography

Lim Tze Peng, a self-taught artist, was a teacher by training and profession. An alumnus of Chung Cheng High School, he first came into prominence during the early 1980s with his Chinese ink paintings of various landmarks of post-independence Singapore. Growing up, Lim Tze Peng was a devoted practitioner of Chinese Calligraphy. As a student in Chung Cheng High, he studied under the eminent calligrapher Huang Jai Ling (黄载灵). It thus comes as no surprise that Chinese Calligraphy greatly forms the foundation of his work and this is clearly evident from the brushstrokes present in all his ink and oil paintings. He spent years practising and perfecting his craft. His groundbreaking ‘Muddled Writing’ (“糊涂字”) and colourful calligraphy, which emerged in the late 2000, sits at the juncture of the old and the new. These works while deeply rooted in the traditions of Chinese Calligraphy, projects a strong, contemporary feel.

Lim Tze Peng has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally. He was a three-time winner of the National Day Award in 1963, 1981 and 2016. In 2003, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion, Singapore most prestigious artistic achievement, for his outstanding contributions to the local art scene.
