East Sumba is well known for its livestock farming due to its fertile grazing pastures and the interrelation of livestock animals with local traditions. However, currently water scarcity due to climate change is heavily affecting livestock farming activity in East Sumba and it is getting more and more concerning. Therefore, this building is responding directly to the main causes of water scarcity in East Sumba which includes excessive evapotranspiration and decreasing infiltration rate.
This building is responding to excessive evapotranspiration by using dew harvesting technology to harvest the water vapour in the atmosphere. Dew harvesting technology will allow the evaporated water from the soil and grass to be harvested and transformed into water instead of escaping to the atmosphere. It will significantly avoid water loss, as initially most of the water in the soil evaporates to the atmosphere. In other words, the dew harvesting technology can create an internal water cycle for self-sufficient water supply which will allow grazing activity including during dry season.
Furthermore, the right grazing intensity can significantly increase soil infiltration rate which means that the soil can store more water for dry season. Unfortunately, it is impossible to have an ideal grazing intensity as grazing resilience can’t be achieved in current condition due to water scarcity. However, the self-sufficient water supply thanks to dew harvesting technology is going to allow grazing resilience which will increase soil infiltration rate and allow the soil to store more water.
As the livestock farming can continuously be conducted by the local community thanks to the internal water cycle and grazing resilience, this building will play a vital role in increasing local economy activity by providing livelihood along with tourism area which is integrated with grazing and cultural area to attract tourists.
