Grovetown Elementary Physical Education
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are looking forward to an exciting new year in our physical education classes. Being physically active has many benefits including increased energy levels, muscular endurance, and a stronger heart. Our physical education curriculum includes a balance of skills, concepts, games, and activities designed to enhance the cognitive, motor, affective and physical fitness development of each child. We will also work on good sportsmanship and attitude throughout the year.
The following is a list of general information that we hope will be helpful to you and your child in planning for physical education classes this year.
1. Active participation in all activities is necessary if your child is to fully benefit from our program. Your child will have P.E. every other day.
2. Good listening skills, paying attention, and following directions are expected.
3. Please dress your child appropriately for physical education. Their clothing should be comfortable and should not prevent them from taking part in the activities. It is not safe for children to wear large or hoop earrings during physical education classes. Girls must wear shorts under skirts or dresses during P.E. classes.
4. In order to prevent injury, athletic shoes are a must for P.E. If your child chooses to wear sandals, boots, flip-flops, dress shoes, high heels, crocs, etc., please be sure to send a pair of athletic shoes on their P.E. days.
5. In case of illness or injury that must limit or exclude your child’s participation in physical education, please send a note to the P.E. teachers excusing them or describing any limitations. If your child will need to be out of PE over a week, please send a note from a doctor.
6. Your child will receive a Physical Education grade. The P.E. grade is based on participation, skill, attitude, and staying on task. Willfully refusing to participate will result in a lower grade.
7. Expected Positive Behaviors
· Respectful – Follow adult's directions / Use kind words & actions / Enter & exit quietly
· Responsible – Keep hands, feet, & objects to yourself / Use equipment appropriately / Show good sportsmanship
· Ready – Wear appropriate shoes & clothes / Put forth your best effort / Be ready to take turns
When personal reflections are needed based on not following direction the following consequences are used in class.
Verbal warning – a stop and think about your choices nonverbal signal will be given.
A one to two-minute time out from the activity or game – allows the student to reflect on choices.
If multiple short duration timeouts have not worked to correct behaviors a student may be sent to time out for the remainder of class.
If a student has continuous problems following the rules a behavior note will be sent home.
Major infractions will result in a Discipline Referral.
We hope we can count on your continued support and involvement in our program. We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Izzo
