a new look at an old look: sexism in fashion

Two years after the end of the war, Christian Dior debuted the “New Look”, a style of dressing with hyper-feminine small waists and full skirts. Dior called this change in fashion “the return to an ideal of civilized happiness”, a metaphor for sexist ideals of women staying in the home. Even if sending women back into the home was not Dior’s intention, his clothes helped the national agenda to re-open the jobs women had taken over during men’s military service.
