In the following video you'll find information about what is probably the most controversial politician in the history of Colombia, maybe just after Simón Bolívar: the general Gustavo Rojas Pinilla. Consider the political situation in Colombia before general Pinilla (the Period known as La Violencia, which was a silent civil war between Liberals and Conservatives, and the Bogotazo of 1948), the social unrest and the brink of a full scale war within the country. Consider also the arguments in favor and against Pinilla as a dictator: how he came to power, how he was suspected of persecuting journalist, students and poltical dissent, how he was forced to renounce to power, starting the period known as 'Frente Nacional' and all the infrastructure, political and social reforms that he implemented. Finally, consider the legacy and the public perception of his persona.
In a test sheet, you have to handwrite the following:
1. Write a short essay (one page max) comparing the political and social processes between Argentina, Chile and Cuba regarding the establishment of dictatoriships in the Cold War era. Try to mention at least five main similarities and five main differences between these three countries in regard to the dictatoriships they had.
2. After watching the video: How do you consider, personally, the political performance of Rojas Pinilla during his four (4) years of governance in Colombia? Do you think he was a good dictator, a necessary evil for the times, an historical tragedy, or something else entirely? Justify your answer with historical facts about his goverment (one page max.)
3. In one test sheet page (or in a white sheet page), make a political map of Latin America with the information about the dictatorships in each country (if applies). Minimal data on each country:
Name of the Cold War dictator or dictators (in case there was several people in charge, Military Juntas, etc.)
The years of duration.
The political ideology.
