In this video you'll find a colombian mini-documentary about the infamous Banana Massacre, in which the colombian state killed an undefined number of workers who were striking against the United Fruit Company, a US company based in Ciénaga, Atlántico. This story is not just about the political landscape of Colombia in the first half of the 20th century, its also the begining of syndicalism and organized workers associations in the country. This event is considered the moment when Colombia entered in the political struggles of the 20th century onwards.
In a test sheet, you have to handwrite the following:
1. About the Interwar Period, write a short essay (one page max.) about the relationship between the Great Depression and the rising of Fascism in Europe. You can also mention the political pressures of the Allies towards Germany and Italy, or the influence of the Russian Revolution in the rest of Europe.
2. Try to imagine you are a revolutionary leader in a very violent and opressive country. Given the example of Gandhi's pacific revolution, how would you incite the masses to protest and establish a new type of goverment. You need to answer at least the following:
What kind of goverment you consider the ideal (a centralist republic, a constitutional monarchy, a confederation of states, a dictatorship of the proletariat, etc.)
Which pacific means of revolt would you consider the most effective ones and how would you enact them.
What risks the masses should have to face in practicising civil disobedience? What safety options you could give them?
Invent a slogan that summirizes your political stance and a logo or a flag.
Would you care to find alliances in other countries? Which ones and how would you do it?
3. Finally, you should write a personal essay answering the following question: Considering that Colombian State has used the military to repress violently the workers attempt to negotiate better work conditions (as in the Banana Massacre of 1928), do you consider syndicalism is a good thing for Colombia's economy? Why? Answer in, at least, one page of the test sheet.
