“The New Mutants” was released on August 28 after being delayed for over two years. The movie is directed and written by Josh Boone and is his first horror movie. This is the newest film in the X-Men film series and is considered the finale to the franchise. The movie follows the teenagers Danielle, Rayne, Sam, Roberto and Illyana, all of which are mutants with their own unique powers. The teens are kept in a facility to help them control and learn to use their powers but may be terminated if they are too dangerous. Early on in the movie, the mutants start to have realistic nightmares leading them to try to escape from their prison.
The mutant’s nightmares act as the means to scare the audience, but the horror elements definitely fall flat. The film is boring at times, especially right after all of the characters are introduced. There’s about a 20-minute period where nothing important happens and seems to just make the movie longer. The settings lack intrigue. Almost the whole movie takes place in the facility the mutants are held. I also found the acting to be bland.
There were some positive aspects about “The New Mutants,” but not enough for me to recommend it. The action parts were well choreographed and the special effects looked good. I also think the film was unique in combining horror with superheroes that aren’t well known, it was just poorly executed. Overall, I recommend giving this movie a pass. The collection of boring scenes, flat acting, and bad horror makes “The New Mutants” a mediocre film at best.
