“Among Us” was a little-known vgame that was released in 2018 that catapulted to fame in 2020. The game is played aboard a space station. At the start of the game, players are assigned one of two roles: crewmate or imposter. The imposters’ goal is to kill the crew without getting caught and the crewmates work together to complete tasks, call meetings and vote out whoever they think might be the imposter. The imposter has to sneak around the ship using vents and faking tasks and secretly kill the crew. While the crew is doing their tasks, they have to always keep watch and trust no one because they could be in the room with the imposter and not even know.
Many discovered the game because they saw their favorite streamers playing “Among Us.” The game is free to play on mobile devices and really cheap to purchase for the PC, which makes it very accessible to people.
The sudden rise in popularity of “Among Us” is also due to the coronavirus pandemic as it allowed for socialization despite social distancing. As the pandemic calls for everyone to social distance and stay away from each other for the time being, the game is a fun way to avoid being bored and a good way to communicate with family and friends. Multiplayer games allow people to play and hang out virtually.
Whether you're following the news, keeping track of COVID-19 cases, or simply trying to stay with the program, it can all get very tiring and exhausting. “Among Us” is an easy distraction that gives us a much-needed break from everyday life.
