Week 22 - Energy (Part 1)

Introduction to Energy

Learning Target: I can identify and investigate gravity, electricity, magnetism, and their fields

Warm-up 1/27/2020

  • What is the name of the force that can cause metal objects to be attracted to each other?
  • What is the name of the force that can cause metal objects to repel each other?
  • What subatomic part of matter is responsible for the attraction and repulsion that we observe between certain metals?

Word Wall

Kinetic Energy - The energy of motion

Potential Energy - Stored energy. The energy held by an object because of its position relative to other objects.

Mass - The quantity of matter within a body

Speed - The distance traveled per unit of time

Velocity - speed plus direction

Work - using a force to move an object

Motion - a change in position

Energy - the ability to do work.

Law of conservation of energy - states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form of energy to another.

Acceleration - rate of change of speed or a change in direction

Force - a push or a pull on an object

Friction - The resistance that an object or surface encounters when moving over another.

Inertia - the tendency of an object to continue at rest or to remain in motion based on its mass

Magnetism - a physical phenomenon produced by the motion of electric charge, resulting in attractive and repulsive forces between objects
