Week 4 - Matter (Part 1)

Introduction to Matter

Learning Target: I can explore how atoms are organized within the periodic table.

Warm-Up (08/31/20)

  • Please make sure your binders are properly organized and labeled.
  • Add ALL graded items to their proper locations in your binder. They are next to the white board.
  • Pull up your grades for this class and check and see if you are missing anything.

Vocabulary Word Wall

Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space Mass - in physics, the quantity of matter Atom - the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element Element - a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protonsSubstance - matter which has a specific composition and specific propertiesSubatomic - smaller than or occurring within an atom Nucleus - In physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons Proton - a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus of an atom Neutron - a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is located in the nucleus of an atom Electron - a subatomic particle that has a negative charge Atomic Number - the number of protons in the nucleus Mass Number - the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom Isotope - two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei so they have a different mass numberElectron cloud - the region of negative charge surrounding an atomic nucleus where there is a high probability of locating the electronsIon - an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical chargeMolecule - two or more elements joined together by a bondProperties - traits that can be measured (like the amount of mass)Period - a horizontal row on the periodic tableGroup or Family - a vertical column of the periodic tableReactivity - the tendency of a substance to undergo a chemical reaction

Quiz Review

Students will review the Periodic Table Week 3 Quiz with the instructor.

Activities

Students will review their graded projects and add them to their binders. Top projects will be rewarded.

Students will be required to complete two remediation assignments based on their most missed questions on the last two quizzes. Required items will read "SUGGESTED PRACTICE".

Students will complete the following directed reading which is due Wednesday:
