Week 3 - Matter (Part 1)

Introduction to Matter

Learning Target: I will explore how atoms are organized within the periodic table.

8/24/20

Warm-Up

Answer in the warm-up section of your science notebook. Be sure to date and label each section.

  • According to science, what things make up the entire universe?
  • What is the difference between mass and weight?
  • Why do you think the periodic table has rows and columns for the different elements?

Vocabulary Word Wall

Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space

Mass - in physics, the quantity of matter

Atom - the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element

Subatomic - smaller than or occurring within an atom

Nucleus - In physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons

Proton - a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus of an atom

Neutron - a subatomic particle that has no charge and that is located in the nucleus of an atom

Electron - a subatomic particle that has a negative charge

Atomic Number - the number of protons in the nucleus

Mass Number - the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom

Isotope - two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei so they have a different mass number

Electron cloud - the region of negative charge surrounding an atomic nucleus where there is a high probability of locating the electrons

Ion - an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge

Period - a row of elements within the periodic table

Molecule - two or more elements joined together by a bond
