Welcome to Bright Stars. We have 2 rooms for different ages, the Mokamoka Room upstairs is for our littlest children aged between 6 - 30 months. The Kahuku room downstairs is for our pre-schoolers to explore and adventure in.

Starting at Bright Stars

From time to time we have a waiting list for families wanting to enroll with us. Please fill in a Pre-Enrolment Form and bring it back to us. Before your child’s first day it is important to schedule visits for you and your child to familiarise yourself with our centre. It is important for your child to feel safe and secure before finally being left with us.

During these visits we can discuss other relevant information, such as; the settling process, what they should wear, what they need to bring with them each day. We can also gather information about your child so we can best meet your child’s needs.

Settling in

Once your child is enrolled, we offer you 6 settling times over a 2 week period before he/she actually starts with us. You will need to spend an hour each time with your child so that both of you can get to know all the teachers and our routines.

What to bring

Please bring a bag for your child with 2 NAMED changes of cloths. You may wish to send your child with a named drink bottle. Please DO NOT bring toys from home. They may be lost or damaged while played with at the centre.

Carseats & Parking

It is a legal requirement for all children to be secured into a car seat when riding in a motor vehicle. Please buy or rent a car seat for your child according to the law. There is an area traffic policeman who comes and does inspection around our centre randomly. There will be a fine issued if you do not abide by this law. Please park your car within the assigned parking spaces around our centre to avoid a traffic jam.

Before 9:00 am

At the beginning of the day we all start together in the Kahuku Room. As more children and staff members arrive the smaller children in Mokamoka move upstairs to start their day.

Signing in and out

It is a legal requirement that children are signed in and out of all childcare centres. The records are kept for 7 year for government auditing purposes. Please ensure you sign in and out each day. The ministry of education requires the name of the parent collecting rather than just ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’.

Ketes (Parent Pockets)

Each child has a kete (basket on the wall) as a communication tool for notices and invoicing. Ketes need to be checked daily for any communication.

Key Carers

Key Carers or Primary Caregiving is all about creating trust and partnership between teachers, parents and their children. Before you child starts with us they will be buddied up with a teachers who will be their Key Carer. When you drop off and leave your child for the first time, he/she will already have made a connection with their key carer through visits. Your child will have a dependable best friend from the very beginning.

The Key Carer is responsible for all of your child caring needs which includes nappies and toilet training, meals and sleep (if required).

We also take pride in caring for your child’s needs and ensure that his/her interests are being supported and extend to the best of the child’s learning ability.

Centre Cell Phone

We have a centre cell phone that the teachers work with daily. You can contact us via text if needed. The number is: 022 639 0396 You can text through absences on this number too.


We have a qualified cook on site who prepares and cooks healthy meals daily for our children. We provide morning tea (9:45-10:15), lunch (11:45 - 12:10) and afternoon tea (2:45 - 3:10) we also provide a ‘late snack’ at 5:00 pm.

We can cater to special dietary requirements. If you would prefer to bring a packed lunch instead you are welcome to. If your child has food intolerances or food allergies please speak to the teachers and we can cater to your child needs.

Sun Safety

We provide sunscreen and will apply it in the morning and after lunch. The sunscreen we supply is ‘Cancer Society Ultra Block SPF30+’. If you have your own sunscreen that you would prefer your child to use you are welcome to do so. Please see the teachers and fill in a ‘category (iii)’ medical form. Please bring a NAMED hat for your child to wear. Children must wear hats when playing outside during the summer months (September-April).

Accidents and Illness

We ask that any child or adult who is unwell be kept away from the centre.

Children with severe coughs or colds, vomiting, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, rashes or raised temperatures cannot be brought to the centre. If symptoms develop during the day the parent or guardian will be contacted to arrange for the immediate collection of their child. For further information please refer to our Illness Policy.

If your child is injured while at Bright Stars you will be given a phone call informing you of the incident at the soonest possible moment. The injury will be recorded and needs to be signed off when your child is collected at the end of the day. If you would rather not be called for minor injuries please speak to your child’s Key Carer.


All our qualified or registered teachers are first aid trained. They are trained to administer antibiotics that have recently prescribed by a doctor. We are not allowed to administer Panadol, paracetamol or any other pain relief medication unless it is in conjunction with antibiotics and certified by a doctor. Please sign our medication chart when dropping off and picking up your child. Our teachers will not be able to administer the medication without your signature. If your child requires Panadol during the day they are not well enough to attend. Some medication and creams are used when needed, for these medications a ‘category (iii)’ form can be completed, please speak with your Key Carer.


From time to time as part of our programme we will arrange an excursion outside of the centre. Written consent will be required for each event. To keep children safe the adult to child ratio is 1:4 and we may require parent help to assist us with supervision.


We send our regular newsletter via Storypark to keep you informed on housekeeping matters and curriculum achievements in each room.

Emergency Procedures

Each month the centre will practice a drill for either, fire, earthquake or lock-down. We will communicate these drills on Storypark the day before they will take place.

Parent & Family/Whanau Involvement

Throughout the year we will hold special events for parents and whanau to attend. These important dates will be shared with you though our newsletter on Storypark.

Self-Review Process/Consultation

We conduct planned and spontaneous self reviews throughout the year to improve our teaching practices. You are welcome to speak to any of the teachers about the self review we are working on at the moment.

Financial Records

Parents/guardians are required to sign an attendance register each day as the child is dropped off and picked up from the centre. This will confirm the child’s attendance and is a requirement for Ministry of Education funding.


If a child is unwell or unable to attend the parent must call or text to alert the Centre. If your child is absent for 5 consecutive enrolled days with no contact made, they will be removed from the roll. If your child has been sent home by the teaching staff for medical reasons, they must have a doctor's certificate verifying that your child is well enough to return.

Late pick up

We understand that occasionally circumstances may mean your child is picked up later than their enrolled hours, however this cannot be outside the Centre’s licenced operating hours, this is a legal requirement. Contact will need to be made to inform the Head Teacher if such an issue arises. Any unnotified late pick up will incur a charge of $5 for every 5 minutes or part thereof which will be billed to you. At this pick up you will be asked to sign a confirmation of the late pick up time.

Early drop off

If your child is dropped off before his/her enrolled times the parent or guardian must stay with them until 10 minutes before their confirmed enrolment time.


If you would like to request holiday leave we require two (2) weeks notice. Please see the Head Teacher for a 'Leave Application Form'. There is no discount for holidays from the centre. Full fees will be charged to keep your child's place on the roll. If your child is absent for 5 consecutive enrolled days with no contact made, they will be removed from the roll.
