The Italian Song Festival, called also festival of Sanremo, is the most popular song contest, held every year in the town of Sanremo, in Liguria.

It consists in a competition amongst previously unreleased songs.

In the aftermath of the second World War, one of the proposals to revitalize the economy and the reputation of Sanremo.

On 29th January 1951 there was the first edition of this contest at the Casino of Sanremo, conducted by Nunzio Filogamo.

Nilla Pizzi, Duo Fasano and Achille Togliani took part in the first edition, and each participant sang 20 original songs.

This edition was badly criticized by the press and music critics of the times, in fact the public continued to have dinner and talk during the performances, but the success of the festival began in the 60s and 70s.

Since 1977 it has been held at the Ariston theater of Sanremo.

This festival took place during the firsts days of February.

Milano-Sanremo, also called "The Spring classic" or "La Classicissima", is an annual cycling race between Milan and Sanremo, in Northwest Italy. With a distance of 298 km it is the longest professional one-day race in modern cycling. It is the first major classic race of the season, usually held on the third Saturday of March.

The first edition was held in 1907. The race was a commercial success and attracted some of the best riders of European cycling, prompting the journal Gazzetta dello Sport to organize a second edition in 1908, won by Belgium's Cyrille Van Hauwaert.

In 1910 the Primavera gained eternal fame and a place in cycling legend because of the extreme weather conditions. Riders needed to take refuge in the houses along the roads because a severe snowstorm scourged the peloton.

In 2021 the race was won by the Belgian rider Jasper Stuyven

San Remo Carnival Flower Parade


In March, San Remo becomes one big party. It’s Carnival time.

You can feel the carnival atmosphere in any corner of the city, with the kids dressed up, the decorations and the last touches being put to the beautiful floats decorated with a mosaic of nearly 50,000 flowers, some of them real works of art.

The locals don’t want to miss the parades and activities in the city so everybody is on the streets to see the event. San Remo is known as the “City of Flowers” and that’s why it looks so beautiful and appealing at this time.

The whole city is involved for this day and more than 60,000 visitors come every year to see the parade. The Great San Remo Carnival Flower Parade will entertain you without doubt!

The floats are composed of a flower arrangement and every float has a specific theme.

The best float gets an award, which is money. The first edition of Carri Fioriti took place in January in 1904 with the name of “Festa della Dea Flora”.

This parade is one of the most important events of the city. Preparatory phase lasts few months and flowers are arranged the night before. The promenade is the location of this big event.

In the 19th century,Sanremo attracted writers, poets, scientists and monarchs because of the beauty of the landscapes and the mild climate. Thanks to the Italian Railway, in 1872, transports improved (trains) and got a big influence in the tourism and luxury Hotels developed and hosted more and more international tourists. Some of the most important hotels were Hotel Des Londres 1861, Hotel Dans Le Terre, Hotel Bellevue in front of the Imperatrice Avenue, Hotel De La Mediterranee and The Hotel Excelsior. In 1870 Germans, after the Franco-Prussian war, came to the Italian Riviera because they were not welcome in France.

The wife of Tsar Alexander II was invited by Antonio Rubino, who will later become vice-consul of Russia, to spend the winter in Sanremo. Sanremo is a touristic city. In 1874 the first bathing establishment opened.

There were hosted also bullfights and international horse-jumping competitions.

The Imperatrice walking was opened in honour to the Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, who gave some palms as gift to the city, that even nowadays decour the Avenue. It is one of the most fashionable and exclusive streets and in the past it gave the possibility to the vacationers to stay in the shadow and rest.

In 1887 Sanremo got the most important prestigious thanks to the arriving of the future imperator of Prussia. Then on the 10th March 1888, after the death of William I, Frederick III, he moved to Berlin to became emperor of Germany. At the end we can say that Sanremo had a big importance for his touristic charm and some distinguished people such as the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the poet and painter Edward Lear (who is buried in Sanremo), Alfred Nobel and Kaiser Frederick Wilhelm.

Among the many eminent guests who spent some time in Sanremo we can mention HRM the Duke of Windsor Edward VIII, the comedians Laurel and Hardy, the Academy Award winner director Vittorio de Sica, the soprano Maria Callas, King Faruk from Egypt, the actress Greta Garbo, the former president of SSSR Michail Sergeevič Gorbačëv, and the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

The first Rally of Sanremo was held in 1928. At that time this automobilistic manifestation was a World competition that belonged to the WRC (World Rally Champioship). To the WRC belong also the rally of Sweden, Pourtugal, Montecarlo and Corsican. But nowadays it is just a national race.

The rally of Sanremo is exactly a street race through the town of Sanremo. Once it was held between Sanremo and Tuscany, passing through Argentina Valley up to Imperia and Albenga.

Now is a little bit restricted, but it is still the most important race in this area.

The entire distance is controlled by assistants that talk to each other by radio.

In fact a group of amateur radio (ARI) helps in the organisation of the rally.

A curiosity Is that there are also two timekeepers that synchronize together the time in order to control the race. There are also a number of stuff all over the street to make sure that a car pass and there aren’t any clash. This year is the 66° edition of the Rally of Sanremo.

Between the winners of the rally of Sanremo, there are many italians. In the last years, it has sprung the talented Paolo Andreucci, with the Peugeot 208 T16 sport car.
