From Research to Recovery 2020

Racial Disparity, Social Justice and the Opioid Crisis

Live Webinar Series

August-December 2020

"Racial Disparity, Social Justice and the Opioid Crisis" brought together leading healthcare professionals, physicians, researchers, judges, social scientists, individuals with substance use disorders, criminal justice reform activists, policy experts, and diversity and inclusion advocates to discuss equity in the health sector and criminal justice system. This series addressed how the current opioid crisis is increasingly impacting communities of color, particularly Black Americans, who have been disproportionately stigmatized and incarcerated for substance use.

Our specific goal with this webinar series was to create meaningful conversations and collaborations to address the structural racism preventing communities of color from receiving treatment, recovery, and wraparound social services for opioid and other substance use disorders in Cleveland, in Ohio, and nationally.

Structural racism and substance use are intertwined through a combination of inequitable systems, and this webinar series examined a range of topics related to healthcare and criminal justice. It showcased evidence-based research and data from diverse urban, state, and national contexts with the goal of providing ideas and strategies for broad-spectrum policy change across institutions.

This series has completed. We hope you will view and share the video recordings of the Webinars, which can be accessed here.
