Blast off! With the new aerospace class

CARVER- Carver Middle High School (CMHS) new aerospace class has kicked off with a great start. The students will be learning the fundamentals of flight and parts of an aircraft.
David Arruda (MET pathways engineering teacher) put together the class to connect students with opportunities with the local aerospace industry. He is going to let his students connect with different pilots and go visit the airport. During the class the students will be designing and building different types of paper airplanes, airfoils to be tested in the wind tunnel, different rockets to launch and will be flying drones. Towards the end of the term, his class will be taken to the Plymouth airport for a field trip.
The students have built and designed their own rockets. They have designed the nose cones and fins for their rockets. David Arruda said he is very excited about this project because he is very passionate about rockets. All of the rockets have been launched during the school day on Wednesday Oct. 13th last period.
The students taking his class have really enjoyed it. “I am definitely enjoying the class since most of the assignments are hands-on and enjoyable in comparison to other subjects” said Kyle Shott (student in the aerospace class). All of the assignments will either be designing on the computer or building what has been designed.
David Arruda wants to get the students involved as much as he can. He wants them to find what they like doing. Arruda was asked what the students would learn the most from. “Whatever peaks the students interests” he responded.
This class may or may not run next year because it depends on enrollment. “If you sign up for the class, it will allow it to run,” David Arruda said. The students interviewed said the class is very enjoyable. “It is genuinely fun above all things,” Kyle Shott said.
