When a model or framework is genuinely open to being changed by the people it represents, it stops being a mirror that reflects the expert and becomes a tool the community can think with. This moment of rewriting is not a disruption. It is the intervention working.
The game is running. A rule says that heat stops work. A player objects. Heat does not stop work, she says. It shifts it. People start earlier, before the sun is high. The rule is wrong — not technically wrong perhaps, but wrong in the way that matters, wrong to the people whose lives it is meant to represent.
The facilitator does not defend the rule. The rule is rewritten.
This moment is small. It takes perhaps two minutes. But something has fundamentally changed. The model is no longer something that was made elsewhere and brought here. It is now partly made here, by the people who live in the system it describes. Their knowledge has entered the framework and altered it. The boundary between expert knowledge and local knowledge has become, briefly, permeable.
This permeability is extraordinarily rare in practice. Models, frameworks, project documents, and intervention designs arrive with an implicit authority that makes them difficult to challenge. They have been produced by institutions with resources and credentials. They are written down, which gives them a permanence that spoken objection cannot easily match. Challenging them feels like challenging competence itself. And so communities engage with frameworks that do not quite fit, bending their own experience to match the model rather than bending the model to match their experience.
The cost of this is not just inaccuracy. It is something deeper. When people cannot change the rules, they disengage from the project. They go through the motions of participation while their real knowledge — the knowledge that would make the model better, the knowledge that would make the intervention work — remains unspoken. The model becomes more confident and less true simultaneously.
The Rule That Rewrites Itself requires specific conditions. The framework must be visibly incomplete — not presented as finished and authoritative but as a working draft that expects to be wrong in places. The facilitator must respond to challenge not with defense but with genuine curiosity. There must be a mechanism — physical, visible, immediate — by which the change can actually be made. In the game, this mechanism is literal: the rule is rewritten on paper, the board accepts it, play continues with the new rule in force. The change is real, not merely acknowledged.
And crucially, the rewriting must happen in the room, in front of everyone, so that the community sees its own knowledge entering the model and changing it. This visibility is not ceremonial. It demonstrates that the model is a tool for collective thinking, not a vessel of external truth. It shifts the relationship between the community and the framework from one of reception to one of authorship.
When this happens, something else follows. Other participants begin to question other rules. The model becomes a conversation. People stop asking whether the model is right and start asking what they want it to show them. They move from being subjects of the framework to being its users. And once that shift has happened, the questions the community starts asking — what if we build storage together, what if we shift crops, what if we invest slowly — are questions that no expert could have brought into the room, because they arise from the intersection of the model and the community's own knowledge of their situation.
Design every model, framework, or tool as visibly incomplete. Present it explicitly as a working draft that expects to be wrong. Build in immediate, visible mechanisms by which participants can change the rules during the process itself. When a rule is challenged, respond with curiosity rather than defense. Make the rewriting happen in the room, in front of everyone, so that the community sees its own knowledge entering the model and changing it. Treat every rewrite not as a correction but as the process working as intended.
