Wounded Knee II

1973

The Oglala Lakota, in collaboration with the American Indian Movement (AIM), occupied the town of Wounded Knee, SD, for 71 days. The activists were reacting to both corruption in their own tribal government, as well as protesting general US government failure to uphold treaties with Native nations. The occupation gained widespread attention throughout the country, fostering support and solidarity from a wide variety of constituencies.
