Artists like the Sons of Hawai'i, the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, and the Kalani Pe'a were able to redefine Native Hawaiian music during the Second Hawaiian Renaissance. During this revitalization of Native Hawaiian culture, bands like The Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau were founded to celebrate traditional Hawaiian language and music. Led by the famous Isreal "IZ" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole, the The Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau famously covered "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Other noteworthy songs include "Hawai'i '78," which represents the lasting impacts of US colonial settlements felt by the Hawaiian people, and "Ku'u Poli'ahu," which discusses spiritual connection to land and the volcano Mauna Kea.
