Mount Rushmore Highway Blockade

Fourth the July, 2020

Indigenous protesters blockaded the highway leading to Mount Rushmore. President Trump had traveled to the monument to celebrate Independence Day with a large crowd and an extensive fireworks show above the mountain. The protest reacted particularly to the threat of the fireworks show–as fireworks had been banned at the site for over a decade–but it was also generally in response to Trump’s presidency, especially his support for the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline.
