Shutdown of Hawaiian Anti-Annexation Press

1894

During the fight against Hawaiian annexation, many activists wrote articles in both Hawaiian- and English-language newspapers. In 1894, the republic (colonial American) government shut down the opposition (anti-annexation) press and jailed John Bush and Joseph Nāwahī, opposition leaders. Nāwahī contracted tuberculosis while in jail and died from it in 1896.  Read more in Aloha Betrayed by Noenoe K. Silva.
