Indigenous-Centered Encampments

2016-Present

In recent years, increased numbers of Indigenous-centered encampments of unhoused people have appeared in the Twin Cities and other metro areas. These encampments are almost always illegal, so they are an example of Indigenous refusal of colonial oppression. In these encampments, unhoused Indigenous folks are often able to find safety and community in the face of oppressive systems that seek to further disenfranchise them.

In Minneapolis, one such encampment is Camp Nenookaasi. Learn more about them on Instagram or in this article.
