Carbon High School's attendance goals are to:
develop student responsibility
develop quality citizenship
help students achieve success in their courses
prepare students for future employment
Missing school due to absence for ANY reason, excused, unexcused, and/or suspensions, can translate into students having difficulty graduating from high school. Excessive tardiness can lead to learning deficits and poor habits that can affect future employment opportunities. In an effort to support students, our school has developed this attendance plan to promote good attendance behaviors and habits.
A student MUST check in at the Attendance Office when arriving late and MUST check out of the Attendance Office when leaving the building or campus during the school day (other than during their lunch time), or the student will be considered truant from classes. Concurrent Enrollment students are advised to check in and out, but they MUST remain in the Grand Canyon/Commons Area or library when on campus without a scheduled class.
DEFINITION: When a student misses a class in its entirety for any reason. Absences can be either excused (E code) or unexcused (U code), but it is still considered an absence. These absences are not "school-excused" absences. School-excused absences are determined by the reason for absence. School-excused absences (R code) may be illness, death in the family, medical appointments, court, etc. Documentation is greatly appreciated and can be submitted to the Attendance Office.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to submit documentation for any reason a student misses school. This documentation will remain with the absence whether it is school-excused or not.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS/GUARDIANS TO CONTACT THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE WHEN A STUDENT IS ABSENT. There is a three (3) school day time period in which documentation for an absence can be submitted. Parents/Guardians may use the form below to document a child's absence.
If a student is absent, the parent/guardian can contact the school Attendance Office between 8:00am and 3:30pm
Phone: (435) 637-0782
Fax: (435) 637-4127
Email: chsattendance@carbonschools.org
DEFINITION: When a student is not inside the assigned classroom when the tardy bell rings.
A student is considered tardy when the tardy bell has finished ringing and they are not fully inside the classroom. The student will receive a tardy in their attendance records. Tardies can NOT be excused.
DEFINITION: When a student is not where they are supposed to be and without an excuse note or hall pass. Also, a student who leaves a classroom without teacher permission or leaves the campus without properly checking out with the attendance office will be considered truant. These types of absences must have visual evidence provided, meaning, a staff member must have seen the student not where they belong.
If a student is found in this situation, the student will receive a sluff (S Code) in attendance.
REMINDER... Before students can check out of the building and leave, a parent contact with the attendance office must be made - a parent contact can be a phone call, an email to the attendance office, or an in-person visit. Sluffs will NOT be excused or reconciled as part of Attendance School, the Ten Day Rule, or Clean Quarter.
**Students leaving at lunchtime or leaving for an off campus class (Concurrent Enrollment) do not have to check out in the Attendance Office.
DEFINITION - For reasons other than illness or family emergencies, parents/guardians can arrange for an absence in advance, that is, three or more consecutive days. All attempts should be made to arrange and approve these absences at least two weeks before the expected absence.
A Pre-Approved Absence form (button below) can be initiated once the parents/guardians have contacted the Attendance Office. Students can obtain a Pre-Approved Absence form from the Attendance Office or this webpage. It must be returned to the Attendance Office before the absence. Upon request, parents may receive a copy of the completed Pre-Approved Absence Form after it is turned in to the attendance office.
If a student knows that they will be absent (pre-approved, school excused, etc.), the teacher expects the student to notify them before and complete as much school work as possible during their absence to keep as current as possible in their class.
Pre-approved absences are a minimum of three days in duration and will not count against attendance credit loss.
FIRSTLY, PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION IS UP TO DATE IN SCHOOL RECORDS (Powerschool) SO YOU CAN RECEIVE URGENT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION. Check your mailing address, phone numbers, email addresses for accuracy.
Prior to reaching seven (7) accumulated absences/tardies...
Your ADVISORY TEACHER on Mondays will alert the student if they have reached 3 absences/tardies in any of their classes.
An ATTENDANCE OFFICE will call home at five (5) absences/tardies.
An ATTENDANCE OFFICE notification will be generated and sent by email informing parents that the student has been placed on Attendance Probation at seven (7) days.
ALSO, be mindful that you... as a student, a parent, or a guardian, have access to attendance records and can view where the student's attendance currently sits in the PowerSchool App. If you need help accessing this information, please call or email the CHS Attendance Office at the above phone number or email.
When a student accumulates a combined total of seven (7) absences and/or tardies in a single class within a grading period/quarter, the student's class grade will become a "PRB" and will replace the academic letter grade currently in the gradebook. The "PRB" grade will not ultimately hurt a student's grade in the class, however, credit for the class will not be awarded until the student has reconciled the Attendance Probation. There are three (3) methods to reconcile Attendance Probation. They are Attendance School, the Ten Class Rule, and earning a Clean Quarter.
ATTEND ATTENDANCE SCHOOL
Attendance School Sessions will be offered multiple times per quarter. The schedule of sessions is as follows:
Monday 6:00am - 7:30am 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Tuesday 6:00am - 7:30am 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Wednesday 6:00am - 7:30am 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Thursday 6:00am - 7:30am 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Friday 6:00am - 7:30am
Attendance School sessions are NOT available when there is no school for students.
Students will be required to pay a $4.00 fine to register for the session they plan to attend. The student MUST sign up for Attendance School in their Advisory class and then visit the Attendance Office to pay the $4.00 fine before they can attend the session. The student will then be enrolled in the next available session. If you show up and are not on the list, you may not attend.
Each session of Attendance School can make up 7 unexcused absences/tardies in one course that has a probation "PRB". The oldest probations will be reconciled first. Sluffs (S code) will NOT be excused or reconciled as part of Attendance School. Expect the attendance/grade to change within 3 - 5 school days.
Attendance School will begin promptly. You must be in the classroom ready to go when your schedule is expected to begin, with no exceptions. The teacher will close the door promptly at that time, and STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED LATE. Attendance School fines are forfeited if a student does not attend or arrive on time.
No personal electronic devices (cell phones) are allowed during Attendance School. The student will be asked to leave and forfeit the $4.00 fine and accumulated time if discovered. Students will be allowed to use their Chromebooks if it is for an assignment.
Students are expected to bring a book or homework.
Students must stay seated; no one is permitted to roam around the classroom.
There is no talking unless the teacher talks to you.
You may have one five-minute bathroom break if necessary. If you exceed five minutes, you forfeit your time and will be asked to leave.
There is NO sleeping or putting your head down.
If students do not comply with the rules of Attendance School, they will be asked to leave and forfeit the $4.00 fine and accumulated time.
This process can be used throughout the current school year to reconcile "PRB" grades and be taken off the Probation list, regardless of the quarter. Sessions may not be banked for future use.
TEN CLASS RULE - ATTEND TEN CONSECUTIVE CLASS PERIODS (ON PROBATION) WITHOUT AN ABSENCE OR A TARDY
If a student attends ten consecutive class periods without ANY unexcused absences and/or tardies in any one of their classes, they can reconcile seven previously earned, unexcused absences/tardies in that class. The student must attend ten classes consecutively in order to achieve this protocol (double-booked classes: attend everyday for ten days, classes that are every other day will take a little bit longer). The student is responsible for recognizing that they have reached 10 consecutive days without blemish and must then complete the Attendance Reconciliation form in their Advisory class. Once verified, the attendance office will record the new codes, and the "PRB"s will be changed back to academic letter grades. The student will then be removed from Attendance Probation. This process will likely take 3 - 5 school days to complete. This process can only be used during the same quarter as the Attendance Probation; it can not transfer between two different academic quarters. The oldest probations will be reconciled first. These days may not be banked for future use. Sluffs (S code) will NOT be excused or reconciled as part of the Ten Class Rule.
EARN A CLEAN QUARTER
After a grading period/quarter has ended, A student attending another full quarter without being placed on attendance probation for absences/tardies in any class may reconcile ALL probations (PRBs) from a previous quarter and be removed from attendance probation. This option may be used more than once. If you are a SENIOR, the clean quarter does not apply during the 4th quarter. Clean quarters must, however, be earned during the school year in which they are used to reconcile "PRB"s. Clean quarters cannot be banked for future use. Sluffs (S code) will NOT be excused or reconciled as part of the Clean Quarter.
The student must recognize that they have earned a Clean Quarter and complete the Attendance Reconciliation form in their Advisory class. Once verified, the attendance office will contact the counseling office to reconcile any assigned "PRB"s. This process is completed once grades are posted and may take 3 - 5 school days to complete.
Attendance Probation does not only affect your academic standing, but it will also affect Honor Roll and your extracurricular activities as well.
Students on Attendance Probation WILL NOT:
Participate in “outside of school hours” activities where tickets are sold, attendance is taken, or during non-class sponsored activities/field trips. This includes, but is not limited to sports events, dances, homecoming activities, etc. This may also include activities associated with school clubs and other groups (Advisor discretion).
Be listed on Honor Roll announcements or attend Honor Roll activities if they are on Attendance Probation at the time of publication.
The Attendance Office will work closely with the Athletic Director to ensure attendance requirements are met and CHS students are not only reaching athletic success, but also academic success.
Students on Attendance Probation WILL NOT:
Participate in games/competitions until they have reconciled their Attendance Probation
Participate in practices until they have reconciled their Attendance Probation (Coach’s discretion)
Participate in other team functions until they have reconciled their Attendance Probation (Coach's discretion)
Participate in tryouts (Students will have 10 school days following the end of a quarter to reconcile Attendance Probations... similar to the Incomplete rule in the grade policy. "PRB" grades, count as "F" grades.)
**ALL athletes who are absent from school on a game day are not permitted to participate in the game/activity unless the absence is school-excused.**
Students who continue to accumulate absences without trying to reconcile them will continue on the following path:
TEN (10) ABSENCES
- Parent/Guardian notified by email/mail.
- If absences are consecutive with no contact, possible enrollment drop.
FIFTEEN (15) ABSENCES
- Parent/Guardian notified by email/mail.
- Possible Attendance Mediation
BEYOND FIFTEEN (15) ABSENCES
- Attendance Contract Meeting (Including Parents, Student, Administration, Behavior Interventionist, School Counselor, Teachers, and Student Advocate).
- Possible referral to JJS.
- Student not on track for Graduation and will not graduate with a Carbon High diploma.
