Q&A with Kennedi Heard, First Team All-State

The Captain Shreve Lady Gators basketball team finished with a 24-5 record and 11-1 record in their district games with the leadership from Forward Kennedi Heard, who made All-State First Team this year, and also made All-State Second Team her sophomore year.
What was expected out of Kennedi Heard this year playing basketball?
“Kennedi needed to step up her game just as much as the other girls but I asked her to do more because she was one of the leaders on the team,” Coach Keith Greene said.
What does it mean to have a player make All-State First Team?
“It shows that our hard work has paid off and the goals we set for our girls are working and keeping the girls motivated in school and in the game,” Greene said.
Did you change your gameplay for this season?
“I had to change a little because we had ACL injuries to both Leah and Dezyre so I had to step up my game for coach and the team I’m not gonna lie it was hard at first but then it become easier throughout the season,” Kennedi Heard said.
What was your initial reaction to the news that you made All State?
“At first I couldn’t believe it. I was like is that really my name? Last season I made second team and this year [I] made first team. It’s a really a blessing,” Heard said.
Do you plan on making All-State again for your senior year?
“Most definitely - and be the MVP next year. It’s also my senior year, so I want to go out hard and strong,” Heard said.
Do you feel like you are a mentor to kids and the other girls on the team?
“I do because some [say] that I am their favorite player, and they want to play like me some day which motivates me to do better. I love my teammates always helping out the younger girls,” Heard said.
Kennedi Heard is going to be a senior next year and plans to work hard constantly to improve her game and try to give the Lady Gators a title next season.
