Well, what a year! Sorry that the website was not updated. We didn't go on any field trips or take any photos. We were all wearing masks anyways! :)
Hope everyone is doing well. Current/former AVID students: keep pushing yourself towards your goals and dreams, but stay healthy and sane. Remember to find a nice balance in life. Have grit. Have empathy. Have a great experience in school so that you can have a great future.
Miss you all,
Mr. Corbin

6th Grade - We started off the new year by setting some goals. Parents, feel free to ask your students about their goals for 2020. We are now studying Conflict Management Styles. This is an AVID strategy where students learn how to better work and communicate with others. It is pretty fascinating and applies to all areas of life. We will then read our class novel for the year called City of Ember.
8th Grade - We are currently in the middle of our biology unit. The goal is to prepare students for some of what they will see next year in 9th grade Biology. We will have six quizzes this quarter. Students are encouraged to form study groups, and use the strategies that I have taught them. They can also get help during tutorial. Next we will read our class novel for the year called Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.
All grades - Please continue to encourage your son/daughter to clean out their backpacks and binders every quarter. They should be hole-punching papers and putting them in the rings of their binders. You might also want to check out their planners (also called Binder Reminders). Students are now copying learning objectives and homework in their planners for all classes.
WE HAVE A HOOSEGOW DAY PARENT MEETING ON WEDNESDAY 2/5/20 @ 6:30PM IN ROOM 314. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT TO RAISING FUNDS TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT AVID AT OUR SCHOOL. THANKS IF YOU SHOWED UP TO THE FIRST MEETING. ALL PARENTS ARE WELCOME!
Best,
Mr. Corbin

8th - Death Valley this Saturday! Make sure to dress WARM. Make sure to pack only what you need according to the packing list. Let's do this!
Students have been studying finances this week. Do you have a college fund for your child? Do they have a savings account? What is an interest rate? What is the different between a job and a career? These are all questions we have been exploring this week.
