Algebra 2 (2021-22)
Mr. Deegan
Mission Statement: To engage all students in learning by providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum in an environment of mutual respect and personal responsibility.
Objectives:
1) Students will use previously learned algebra and geometry skills to solve a variety of problems.
2) Topics include:
a. Polynomials (Solutions & zeroes) e. Linear Inequalities
b. Exponents and Logarithms f. Statistics
c. Conic Sections g. Various Functions (Rational, Linear,
d. Linear & Quadratic Equations Exponential, . . .)
Rules and Expectations:
1) Paper and a pencil/pen are required each day, along with your assignment. You may keep your book at home for doing homework assignments. I would also suggest purchasing a TI-83 plus or TI-84 calculator for class. Have a regular calculator (such as a TI-30) available each day.
2) Respect the teacher and each other. Listen and wait for your turn to speak. No Swearing or inappropriate language. Treat others as you want to be treated. If I call on someone, do not answer for them. Keep comments positive and non-threatening to others. Ask permission if you need to sharpen a pencil or get a tissue during a lecture. No Food in Class. Ipods and cellphones are allowed only during assignment time (not during warm-ups), but cannot be used other times or they will be confiscated until day’s end. Homework must be up to date to use this privilege. This privilege can be revoked if not respected.
3) Show up to class first. Do not go anywhere else unless it’s an emergency. Being on time to class is very important to me. Tardy policy will be enforced according to handbook, but no detentions.
4) See the Warrior Way: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be a Role Model.
Assignments:
a. Show work when needed/required and make it readable
b. All Late work = 50% off (Most work must be ready by start of class)
c. Late work will only be accepted until the unit test is taken. It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments when they are absent. If you miss a day, then two assignments will be due the day after you return to class.
d. Cheating or help cheating = zero on that assignment or test (Do not share papers)
Extra Help:
a. Math Lab – check the schedule in my room. I have it posted.
b. After school – available most days (not Mondays); be sure to make appointment
c. Email: edeegan@cantonschools.org . All messages checked this way. Please do not leave phone messages.
Notebooks:
a. Include important terms and practice problems
b. Notes should be neat, in order, and complete (Student is responsible for getting these!) c. Taking notes and doing practice problems are part of the homework grade
Grading:
a. Homework: 15% of overall grade
Homework and Participation in class = 10-20 points each (Points deducted when students are not participating in class: notes, practice and warm-up problems, in-class work. If students are not on the right track, then they will need to redo it.
b. Specifically Graded items: 85% of overall grade
Graded homework (done occasionally)
Mid-Chapter Quizzes and some unannounced quizzes
Projects (50% deduction for handing in late)
Tests

Probability and Statistics (2021-22)
Mr. Deegan
Objectives:
1) Students will use data to explore probabilities to predict outcomes and to also explore these probabilities with experiments. First quarter will be all probability, while the last three quarters will include statistics. The major part of this course will be using data or statistics to make inferences or predictions about certain outcomes.
2) Topics include, but are not limited to:
a. Theoretical Probability e. Measures of Central Tendency
b. Experimental Probability f. Normal Distribution
c. Permutations & Combinations g. Confidence Interval Tests for different parameters
d. Quantitative vs. Categorical variables
Rules and Expectations:
1) Paper and a Pencil/Pen are required each day. Textbooks will be used at the start of second quarter when statistics is introduced. Textbooks may be kept at home, unless I require them in class. A small calculator (such as a TI-30) is required for class.
Also, no food in class. Music may be listened to during assignment time (not during warm-ups), if your homework is up to date. This privilege can be revoked if not respected. Improper cell phone use will cause it to be confiscated until at least the end of class.
3) Come to class first. Bathroom breaks one at a time and must be signed out. Being on time to class is very important to me. I will use the tardy rule as outlined in the handbook.
4) Check the Warrior Way: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be a Role Model.
Assignments:
a. Show work when needed/required and make it readable

a. Include important terms and practice problems
b. Notes should be neat, in order, and complete (get missing notes if absent) c. Taking notes and doing practice problems are part of the homework grade
Grading:
a. Homework: 15% of overall grade
Homework and Participation in class = 10-20 points each (Points deducted when students are not participating in class: notes, practice and warm-up problems, in-class work) It’s important that students are using the correct strategies. If students are not on the right track for the assignment, then the student must redo the homework for credit.
