What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientific-based research about reading and writing.

  • Explicit and systematic phonics instruction is critical for learning to read. Direct explicit instruction is required in order for students to successfully decode words.

  • Word recognition plus language comprehension equals reading comprehension.

  • Language comprehension includes building background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning andl literacy knowledge.
